No Sir, I was not going 54

I was pulling out of my neighborhood this evening taking my son to foolball practice. I am going about 42. I know that, because I looked down at my speedometer as soon as I saw the lights on the car coming the other way. I thought nothing of it until I saw him turn around in my rearview mirror. The lights turn on, and I pull over. He asks for my license. He says "do you realize you were doing 54?" I said, "no sir, I was not doing 54. I do not mean to argue, but I looked down at my speedometer as soon as I saw you. I admit I was going 42(speed limit 35)." He asks "when was your last ticket?" I reply "two years ago in Arkansas. I cannot remember the last ticket here in Florida." He asks "what year is this car". I reply "2010." He says "watch the speed, especially with the wet roads." I say "Yes sir. Thankyou." No ticket.

As my 10yr old son and I pulled away, I looked over at him and said "I was not going 54." He looks over at me and says "you were not going 54 dad."

I will need to check the speedometer against GPS and my other cars.

Am I the only one thinking that the police officer would not be able to accurately determine the speed of a car traveling in the other direction (at least one that's not FLYING) while both cars are moving..? Radar, laser, vascar, etc all require the officer to be stationary.. The only thing he could've done while moving is match the speed, I think, but it sounds like he flipped the lights on as soon as he turned around? Hmmm, I'd say he either has no concept of how speed detection works.. or more than likely wanted a closer look at the nice new camaro!
(Violation: [X]Speeding | Speed: 54 | Method used: []Vascar []Lidar []Radar[X]Ehh, I just kinda eye-balled it while traveling in the opposite direction..)

We have one of those 'your speed' signs on our way to work and mine has been acurate every time I've looked.

Check it out like you said. It would be odd to be so far off.

That is NOT correct! Radar is used in 90% or more of all municipalities and the least expensive and very accurate. RADAR measures speed by Doppler shift, LIDAR calculates speed.

Pacing is also mentioned. Speedometers are certified calibrated and dead nuts accurate.

VASCAR is a set length over a certain time to calculate speed.

So, if an officer has RADAR, the doppler shift is capable to be utilized fore, aft, both or moving.

While in motion, the RADAR unit calculates the speed of the patrol vehicle against the forward progress of the target vehicle and speed is determined. Units MUST be calibrated and I usually calibrate mine beginning of day, whenever I write a ticket, and at end of day.

A Google search would have clarified the misconception of what is known and what is percieved to be known.

a friend of mine once went to court and started explaining all the reasons why the officers radar could be inaccurate. When the judge asked him how he knew so much he said "I'm a radar repair specialist for F4 fighters in the Air Force.". Case dismissed
