Anyone know where the OnStar module is located?
A friend of mine just bought a wrecked '11 SS and he told me I could pick anything small off the car.
I'd like to take the OnStar module from it and use it on mine so I could use the features in the My Link app. Anyone know where the module is located? Can I assume it's a plug and play type of thing? I'm sure the dealer might have to program something but it shouldn't be that big of a deal right? This post from Bumblebeecamaro using Tapatalk

Ozzie as others have posted it's in the glove box (above it) the glove box itself can be pulled out to gain access to the onstar module once that is pulled and put into yours the BCM needs to be programmed.

The BCM does not have to be reprogrammed if you just want the use of the Bluetooth hands free phone calling (no onstar or my link), but as mentioned above if you want that stuff, it will have to be reprogrammed.
As to whether or not the mylink will actually work in a 2010 with a 2011+ bluetooth box idk. There may also be the possibility of the box having different harness plugs as the 2010 box is a different part number than the 2011+, but I can not confirm or deny that. Just brain storming possible problems. |

okay, so here's another question. I would have to have the BCM reprogrammed as I'm told. does this mean they have to mess with my ECM as well? I ask because my ECM has a different tune and so on. just making sure that won't cause any issues.

I think it is the smart phone app that OnStar put out. I like and use it for my car and my wife's car. Only downside is you have to log out to switch vehicles, but it only adds a few seconds to switch vehicles.

I was told that the Onstar modules are programmed to that specific cars vin number and if you sign in using your info and your vin number then the "new" module won't respond because it thinks you are looking for a different car.
It would be interesting to see if this actually works. |

That's why the BCM needs reprogramming.

What Belle said, as far as location. Take off the glovebox and remove the black, plastic covering the module.

I think I read somewhere that you would just have to call Onstar from the car once the new module is installed to let them know you changed. Might want to give that a try after replacing before spinning your wheels with a BCM reprogram.

I don't think a dealer can actually change the programming in an Onstar module. I think your best bet is afterwards do as the above posted suggested and contact Onstar. Then again of course chances are we all may be over thinking this and it really be just plug and play. |
