What's your business about?
It’s an aquaponics business. Aquaponics is like hydroponics (soil-less plant growing), but it includes fish into the system. The fish are in separate tanks. The waste from the fish goes through filters and certain bacteria that convert it to nutrients for the plants. The plants then clean the water and it is punped back into the fish tanks. All of the produce and fish grown are organic, taste much better, and the produce lasts for a much longer time without browning. A 60x120ft greenhouse would produce 144 heads of lettuce a day and 250 lbs of fish a month. If you want, just ask me questions about it. I love talking about it. I’ll be meeting with someone on Tuesday about some property and will hopefully have the business started before the end of the year.

Haha. You did better than I did. People's names are all over the place on this forum if you look.

As a commercial fisherman for 20 years, that is pretty cool. I'm a computer nerd now, but I grew up on the water.

What types of fish do you have in your tanks?

I will have all male tilapia. They’re very hardy and grow fairly quickly. It’s literally the best fish I’ve ever tasted because of how clean its environment is. When they’re ready to harvest, they are moved to a purge tank filled with fresh water that is separate from the main system. A little bit of salt is added to the tank to sedate the fish a bit. They stay in that tank for a few days without being fed so they burn all the fat that gives it the fishy taste. After that, they’re taken out and put straight on ice. They just “go to sleep”. It’s humane and clean.

I’m also a bit of a computer nerd. My dad is too, being a technology director for a school system. I’m not in this as a farmer, I’m in it as an engineer.

Lowkey fascinated with this. It's awesome that you know exactly what you're doing.

For my senior trip, instead of going to Disney World or something like that, I decided I wanted to fly up to Wisconsin for an aquaponics master class. I pretty much learned from the people who practically perfected aquaponics. I also plan on expanding to different states later on so maybe you could help out if I ever expand to North Dakota.
