The manual (and the 710 cap) say Mobile 1
I would only consider putting in
Mobile 1, Royal Purple, or AMSOIL
as for the oil filter
ACDelco, K&N, WiX, or Royal Purple. (FRAM is a maybe, tough guard or ultra only)
I get a big kick out of Wix since it is made in Poland (and i am from polish decent)
I have been putting Wix in my other cars for a while now.
I get my oil changed free from the dealership. (used car deal)

btw i would not swap oil to a none synthetic unless you don't care about your car.
the car was design to run synthetic (at least the SS was)

keep in mind that the cost of your oil is about the same
Synthetic = 7000 miles = around $9 a quart = .13 per mile
Synthetic Blend = 5000 = $6.50 = .13 per mile
Conventional = 3000 miles = $4 = .13 per mile

The Wix stuff sold in the US is made in the US in North Carolina. http://www.wixfilters.com/About/PlantLocations.aspx

Royal Purple and Pf48 filter in my 'maro and Tahoe both.

I tow ALOT with my Tahoe for long distances and have been very impressed with the oil so far. 14k miles towing a bass boat this year so far.
I DO have the dod turned off, so I can't comment on whether it helps the oil consumption issue that some of the 5.3 engines have because of the dod.

I had a 1970 Chev 4x4 with a 454 in it. Used it to tow my race car. Got so hot on some long hills that I would have to pull over some times in the summer heat. Put royal purple in it and after that the temp needle never budged off of 200.
I am bolting on a Maggie in my camaro now and will run royal Purple, because I have seen it with my own eyes.

My wife drove our 1995 buick 3.1 V6 home one day a year ago on a hot summer 100 degree day with the radiator bone dry. She did not notice the pegged temp gauge or the red warning light. She works 14 miles from the house, so somewhere along the way home the drain valve broke at the bottom of the radiator and all the coolant ran out onto the road as she drove home. The car was so hot when she pulled into the drive that I could smell it from more than 30 feet away. The car had Mobil 1 in it. I fixed the radiator, filled it up with new coolant as it ran just fine. I changed the oil with fresh Mobil 1. And to this day the car runs great. Also I have a Silverado with a 5.3 V8 that's just 500 miles shy of 200,000 and it runs like new. Always run Mobil 1 in my vehicles. My Camaro SS gets Mobil 1.

But the manual says the motor oil must be dexos1 approved for the LFX motor. Does this dexos1 thing matter? I was thinking that maybe full synthetic is the way to go versus the synthetic blend dexos stuff that GM recommends.

Here is about all the oil reading you need. They have compiled the charts in the first post from readings of oil samples sent in.

Looks like I am moving to Pennzoil Platinum, it gets great results. Also Pennzoil has a awesome warranty you can sign up for if you keep your receipts and log your oil changes. 10 years/300,000 mile engine warranty. http://www.pennzoil.com/motor-oil/pe...-oil/#Warranty

For what it's worth, I just had my car tuned at East Coast Superchargers. This is a shop that has built multiple record setting Corvettes in the 1000 HP range. I had them change my oil while I was there and they use Amsoil 5w-30. Best regards, Peter
