I've owned a 5th gen RS and currently a 6th gen SS, and taking the motors out of consideration, the 6th gen is better in every single way. There's no reason to get a 5th gen if you can swing a 6th. The Alpha platform and cut weight makes the stock SS on par with the 5th gen ZL1, it's a quick car.
The LT1 is holding up fine. It's what they put in the C7 Stingray. The only A8 problems was the shudder when it was shifting, and if you do get it, take it to GM and they'll do a flush for you at no cost as it was a recall. |

Shoot, even then, I wouldn't look at the 5th gens anymore.

The input here is great.
Gen 5 ZL1 with 580HP? Maybe. It would be fun with those ponies but the car is far from perfect. You can find one for around $35k. Gen 5 auto L99? NO WAY. I had one and it's a dog. Gen 6 auto LT1 vert? For Sure! Mine was a previous rental. Not perfect shape but got it for $24k back in Jan. Don't forget that the new 2019 1LT I4 turbo with 275HP has a sticker of $26.5k which you can get for $24.5k. Lots of fun with that one too and brand new! |

Why not post on 5th gen forum just for contrast (fun)?

The OP asked about any issues with the LT1, there were a few late model 2017 and early 2018 that had oil pump failures. But that is about the only LT1 issues I have read about.

That was the LT4 not LT1. The early LT1's had some issues in the 2014-15 Stingrays, but it wasn't wide spread.

I chose a 5th Gen ZL1 over a 6th Gen SS mainly for the usability.
The 6th gen is noticeably smaller (headroom & leg room) in the front seats, rear seats and not to mention the trunk is also smaller. The 5th gen is much easier to live with if you have kids.

Its all a matter of preference. I owned a 5th Gen now 6th Gen. The 5th Gen was a great car but the 6th gen is a greater car.

I find the 6th gen plenty spacious. Seats are really good.
Excellent ergonomics. Similar size to a E90 generation 3 series. |

The only advantage of the 5th. Gen is better rear seat space.
The 6th gen is a better well developed machine, lighter and nimbler best handling car with the best Camaro platform "Alpha". Don't consider an older design unless you need the rear seat space. I owned both. If you are doubtful about the A8 automatic transmission reliability, get instead the bulletproof 6 speed manual transmission
