Code p0420 options

So here is the deal I've been having a lot of trouble with my catalytic converters. i had replaced the right side (bank 2) converter about a year or so ago but it was under some kinda warranty,, I didn't pay of out pocket. Recently I received the dreaded p0420 engine code so the shop I took it to said that the converter was bad. It was bank 1.,,he told me that it needed to be replaced but I'll be honest I didn't have $1000 to spend on a new converter so he told me he would hollow or gut the cats. I said ok but how will I pass my emissions test? He told me that I can run the gutted cats since my inspection doesn't go out until next year.. drive it until I can afford to get a tune and when I go to get it inspected they will see that there is some cats in place even tho they don't function so I'll pass. Is this legit?? I don't wanna fry the engine by driving it daily with no tune either

I would not do this, This code relates to threshold efficiency of the cat is beyond limit.

It is sometimes fixed by cleaning the MAF and or changing the rear 02, running top tier fuel etc..
Your call.

Many times failed converters are the result of other problems up stream. Gutting them may alleviate the code but not necessarily the root problem so maybe further diagnosis is needed.

He had told me it could be from reeving the engine,, is that true??? I mean I get on the throttle a lot but I've done that on a lot of cars and never had converts failing

Yeah I'll just wait until I can get the tune,, so do you think it's ok to hollow the cats out get a tune and I'll still pass emission testing in tx? I've seen some guys on this website do it but idk if it's smart. $1000 for a converter I just can't do right now but this is my DD

Also just something to throw out there this AM my car isn't showing there's a check engine light. No codes,, so I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion on if the car has a bad converter

get some anti-foulers from the auto parts store. Cheap enough to try and they cured my code.

Invest in an OBD2 scan tool and just clear the code! I get 0420 and 0430 every time I drive over 200 miles straight. I got it yesterday, went to pick my son up, 220 mile round trip. I have a HYPERTECH tuner, cleared them and they won't come back until I make that trip again. Of course the dealer is going to sell you cats everytime the CEL comes up, that's how they make money.

Won't pass inspection (in Texas anyways) because the monitors won't be ready.
