Fuel Door Location ?

I often wondered why the fuel fill door wouldn't have been placed on "top" of the rear quarter panel and thought it would look great there. I just got the book "A Legend Reborn" and notice that several of the pics actually show the fuel door there. Anyone know why it ultimately ended up on the side of the quarter panel and opposed to the top?

Thanks!

Its not very practical in real life. The pics you see in the book are of the show car, which basically gets rolled on and off of a trailer its entire life. It real life water would puddle there if it rains, possibly causing rust issues or even getting water in your tank. I also heard that it was moved for crash test reasons. It dosen't look as cool, but the quanter panel is a safer place for it. I personally wish they were still behind the license plate but that is a safety concern.

I kinda wish they had put the gas fill on the driver's side. A real PITA when filling up and everyone else is headed in the other direction at the pumps.

I like having the filler on the passenger side. That's where it was on my Mazda and on our VW. More cars seem to have it on the driver's side because I've found shorter waits/lines on the left side of the pumps. Many times I've rolled up to the station to find people waiting for driver's side hoses and available passenger side hoses.

You could relocate it to the top if you wanted..

Probable cost? $1500-2000 to patch, prime, blend the quarter, routing to new opening, satin GM aftermarket gas tank door..you could use the existing neck and plastic insert and drill/file some better drain holes.

Would look really cool if done right and would set your apart...You could say it was a prototype.

Oh come on...be honest. You got caught a few times pulling up to the pump the wrong way!

I'd rather not stand on the side of the highway where the cars are coming from when I'm refueling with a spare tank of gas if I so happen to run out.

Passenger side, ftw.

And this is why many manufacturers put a little arrow on the Fuel Gauge to point you to the correct side of the car for the fuel door.

I was always amazed at how many years it took for most of the manufacturers to catch on to this one. I had some Fords early on, and if I recall right my 1969 Torino had an arrow on the gas gauge. But it may have been a later car that I owned. I always thaought that was a nice touch. Especially if you rent cars a lot and it helps when you need to refuel the car before returning.

I actually noticed this when driving the Camaro Concept on Midnight Run:LA on my PS3 the other night. I thought it looked good, but might cause some problems with water runoff.

I like the tank on the passenger side. It creates way less damage when I open my door into the gas pump.

I own a 94 Camaro and my wife drives a Benz. Her tank is on the passenger side. I pulled in a bunch of times the wrong way when filling up her car. So when I got the 2010 Camaro, I had a little practice pulling in on the passenger side.

Yeah, its on the wrong side, if it were an import piece of.. then the passenger side is perfect, but its not, and they got it wrong!

Although, it does make it easier to fill up both my Camaro's on one pump...

I wish there was a little hook or something to hook the gas cap into. I really don't like letting it lay against my side stripe. Anyone have a clever idea?
