Living with the Ducati for a year made me realize two key things. #1 - although competent off-road, it lacks sufficient travel to offer both a compliant ride and acceptable ground clearance - so you have to run it STIFF to hold up to any significant pace off-road, which makes it a very rough ride. I also worry about he fragility of the bike in crashes. I never had it down, but when you ride in the dirt enough, that's a foregone conclusion. #2 - I'm a horsepower junkie, and while the Ducati was sporty, I wanted more performance on-pavement.
So, I did the only logical think and sold the Ducati so I could pick up another VMax - this time a 2006. The VMax is the muscle-car of motorcycles, and it's perfect for the kind of riding I enjoy - spirited 1-2hr cruises. This one has really good suspension on it - which is the sore spot on these bikes stock. It's got a great exhaust, jetted, really nice bike, and the perfect on-road bike for me.

Selling the Ducati and getting the VMax was great - but it left a hole in the "adventure bike" space. I knew that I wanted something light and capable offroad. I also wanted something simple, easy to work on, and ultra reliable. It also needed to be a modest cost - the burden of multiple motorcycles!
So, the choice was obvious, the venerable DR650 is really a great "light" adventure bike - perfectly capable of highway speeds, but sub 400lbs, adequate suspension, and extremely simple. I love this thing in the dirt - it's not quite a dirtbike, but it's not far off. It has reworked forks that work quite well, and a few other tasteful mods that make it a great adventurer. It's been on a few trips already, and it's exactly what I need. It's also a great teacher for new riders, and I've employed it to do exactly that. WOOT for motorcycle threads!

I've had a bunch of bikes over the years, down to just the one right now but getting too old to put many hours on the Daytona. Have been thinking about getting an adventure bike as well. Looking at the Triumph tiger (guess I have a thing for Triumphs)

I'm a little late to the party, but here's my 2011 Road King Classic. It used to be black, but I wanted a more classic look so I re-painted it Caribbean Blue and White, with a crystal pearl clear.

This thread is from a long ago time… However, nice recovery…
I’m riding a 2023 Indian Challenger… It’s stock, runs really nicely, and I’ve only added a few cosmetic items… A cup holder, a phone mount, and the M Custom Sissy Bar and Luggage rack… I’m headed from south central Texas to West Virginia, 1525 miles, in a couple of weeks… Doing a ride in for a Custom built Laam Seat… The factory seat is mehhh, so I purchased a “Road Sofa” seat and it might be worse… Gel pad, 1500 mile breakin, blah blah blah… We are not all built the same and the RS is 1.5 inches narrower than my stock seat… Rode it for about 5k miles hoping it would ‘breakin”… Nope, never did… So it’s custom One Off time… I’ll be stopping at any/all Indian Dealers I can find along the way… Stocking up on t-shirts… So this was departing for a day long ride when it was 29°F, I love my snowmobile suit… Best purchase this south Texas boy has made in a while… Castle X for the win…Yes my left hand looks wonky… That’s the remnants of -neuropathy due to multiple strokes when I had my heart attack… They won’t let me race anymore, so I ride instead… As a retired Paramedic, I found this old Datsun Ambulance inviting… Found it on a morning ride with some friends…
