AEM AFR erratic behaviour
Got my AEM AFR 30-4110 installed. Checked the Bosch 4.9 sensor with brake cleaner as advised from AEM support - all fine. Full rich (10) with brake cleaner for a minute - by removing it goes lean (17).
On idle it shows this: Itīs very erratic @ idle. Between 13.5-16+. Only on WOT itīs in a steady range 10.5-10.9. While cruising it moves in any direction - 12-16. Doesīt make any sense to me. Engine is warmed up properly. Connected power+ and ground- to the cigarette lighter lines. Finally need this for a final tune with SCT X4, but Iīm afraid that the logging is ruined by a wrong setup. Any thoughts from your side? |

Did you switch on the car without giving power to the sensor? Switch on the car may damage the sensor if not connected to the power supply.
BTW I've never heard about cleaning an o2 sensor with brake cleaner

Power is on the cigarette lighter lines as you turn the key. So - I donīt run the sensor without power :big grin:...
The brake cleaner procedure was done, because I contacted the AEM support on this issue. The sensor is new and I didnīt try to clean it - I tried to find out, if the sensor is working Last edited by nidecker; 04-23-2016 at 03:45 PM. |

It's going to bounce around at idle. WOT it will go steady.

Valuable answer - the only thing I worry about is the bouncing while cruising...I thought it would be more steady...

So if itīs common to bounce around - whatīs the meaning of an AFR gauge...is only for the purpose of getting the info if the engine is running too lean on WOT?

It looks like it's very slow, but OEM vehicles that run stich at low loads...ie 14.7:1, strictly speaking do not sit static at this.
They'll be switching very fast either side of this always monitored and corrected by the factory narrowband sensors. Although that does seem a fairly wide swing on yours. How does it read at low speed, steady speed cruise etc ? Where is the sensor isntalled ? |

That looks very normal to me. Open loop and wandering at idle and closed loop and steady at WOT. Go ahead and log the vehicle. Your tuner will tell you if something is wrong with the AFR output on your log.

Like others have said, that is completely normal for idling, and looks like its functioning correctly, just like it should. Think of it as a wave like on an oscilloscope, the computer is always trying to get the afr at what's its commanded at, in open loop. So it goes rich to lean, then rich to lean, then over and over the cycle repeats. Then once you go WOT you go closed loop, then the AFR should be steady, it may change from what its commanded at in your tune by a few points, but all in all, you will notice that it stays pretty steady.

Before I posted this question I search the forum + the internet for days for an precise answer, because before opening up a new thread, everybody should use the search function :big grin:
But I couldnīt find anything regarding a correct behaviour of this AFR gauge...now everything is much clearer to me and gives me a good feeling using the AFR gauge. Thanks guys - this was more than helpful ! regards from Germany! |
