Convertible vs coupe

I am in the market for a Zl1. I am looking at a 2013 convertible or a 2015 coupe. Both 6 speeds. The car will be nice weather only. May see the track once or twice total and go to the drag strip a few times a year. I know the verts don’t have ptm. I have searched and searched but the only 1/4 mile number I can find for the vert are magazine numbers

how much performance am I giving up going with the vert?

What are verts running with simple bolt ones like intake, headers, pulley, and tune?

Is there a big difference on how they feel when street driven? .

Those with verts do you wish you would have gone coupe or for the street are they close enough?

I really like the idea of the vert as I miss my 98 firebird formula with t tops. I just don’t know if the performance difference will be worth it.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum Ds!

First, all Gen 5 ZL1's are 6 speeds: the difference is manual or auto.
Second, the vert is governed at 155 mph, weighs approximately 200 lbs. more than the coupe, and is without the 5 performance mode settings.

I love the vert. The one thing that is a negative is if you want to drag or track it you will have issues unless you put a cage in it. The 155 governor is easily removed when you do a tune.

Schuss yeah I want to say I read that they changed the rules and coupe and convertible are the same now so I would “need” a cage either way. I could be wrong. Really I will prolly rarely go to the track. What did you have done to your car for the time you ran in your sig?

Mine has cam, ported heads & snout, headers, upper and lower pulleys, injectors, cai, high flow cats.

Would be faster however I only get to the strip once maybe twice a year. I go on rental days and they give a little extra leeway with the speed. Still get kicked off but not right away.

Ah ok. How does the car feel on the street? Does it feel like it is not ridged enough with that power?

She's plenty rigid, they did an amazing job with the vert. Drives like a dream on the street, top down, really hearing the roar of the exhaust and the whine of the supercharger.

Personally, I'd go with the coupe... lighter, 5-PTM's, nicer rear spoiler, and the availability of Recaro's if you find a 2014-2015 with them.

I may be a bit biased though as I own a 2013 coupe, lol.

Either version of the car is a beast though.

You won't need a 6 point roll bar until you are quicker than 10.0 seconds or faster than 135 mph. Unless you are planning on some serious mods and a lot of money and over 750 rwhp, you will never be that quick or fast.

I have taken my 2013 convertible to a few tracks.
The car is stock except for a Rotofab CAI.

I've had it on Michigans MIS speedway, Gingerman, and the M1 track, each time running in the beginner class njust for fun. No issues at all with it being a convertible other than needing a helmet for Gingermans. Unless you are going to seriously track the car, odds are you'll never be pushing it to it's limit especially the 155 top end.

I've also taken it to the local drag strip (Milan Dragway) for a club day event, mostly a tune/track day.
Again, no issues with it being a convertible. Odds are the only time a drag strip will impose the need for a rollbar is if you go too fast like Vegas Bound stated, or if it's a scantioned race event. Track strip speeds will never approach the 155 limit of convertibles.

My advice is to buy the convertible and enjoy the hell out of it !

I've owed both, a manual coupe and currently the rag top , but with auto. I don't regret the switch, light to light the weight difference isn't that bad, and there are only a few places you will hit the limiter, and it is removable in the tune.

We do a yearly trip to the mountains in BC and having the top down, the echo of the car off the mountains, and 600hp when you need it....

I agree with the above comment, add a roto-fab and pulley, sounds awesome with the top down. Oh, and headers, can't forget those...

Thanks for all the responses guys. I decided to go with the coupe. They dealership thought the vert was made of gold. When I get home I will put up some pictures. Thanks again for the replies
