How is this possible. Coolant temp says 243 but the needle isn’t even halfway

In the process of changing the thermostat as we speak but what would explain this. This was in traffic and quickly went back down after moving

My real question is how does the temp gauge needle say I’m well below halfway but the digital dash say 243 degrees

because its not real time , its computer controlled. Its done this way so people don't complain the needle is up and down all the time. If the coolant stays high the needle will eventually go up high too. TThe needle gauge doesn't show spikes, only averages over time. Try a scanner and watch the engine temp vrs the needle gauge, then you'll understand.
