UNDERSTEER AND THE 305/35/20

I NEVER TRACK MY 1LE, and it's time to buy a new set of tires. I have settled on the Firestone fire hawk indy 500's . I was planning on running the 305/35/20's in the rear and the 285/35/20's in the front . Will I notice any difference ? Will it understeer a lot when pushed on the street ? Am I gaining anything by using the 305's in the rear and 285's in the front ? Will I loose anything running this set up ? Should I just go with the 285's all the way around and stop being necrotic about it .? One thing I can tell you is the stock Goodyears really suck bad in the rain .

Like you never tracked your car I've never ran 305s in the rear..... having done a few autocross outings i must say I dont see why anyone that cares about the handling of this car would purposely induce more understeer. If you are strictly a drag racer then year go for it. If you like pushing the car and like the way it handles then don't.

At the limit this car turns into a snowplow. I was one of those "purists" where I would never touch the balance of the car..... after doing the autocross I upgraded to a 32mm rear sway bar to dial out some understeer.

I did go with MPSS after the goodyears were shot and now have the MP4S on. I couldn't do another set of G2s for daily driving. I do want to try the G3s now they come in our sizes.

I know this subject has been beat to death , but im looking for some First hand info from people who have done this . No drag racing, no track days ,just running hard on the street . Planning trips to Colorado in the summer and
need a tire that's not terrible if it rains. The Firestones get a better overall rating than the stock goodyears and cost a good bit less . Im thinking the firestones are going to be a better tire on the street over all for me .

I ran mine pretty hard at Tail of the Dragon and I like to push it on the streets too. I have 285s front and 305s on the rear with no issues at all with understeer.

I've been running a 285/295 set up for a long time. I do have just about all of the old Justice Pete mods and run his alignment specs. When I first set up the car I started driving hard and my first hard right almost put me into the curb because it was that much improved.

That being said I'm switching to coil overs and I'm going to run 295/305.

Also camber plates are mandatory to fit big tires up front.

I beat mine on the street with 305’s in the rear, but I still oversteer simply because of my power level.

I am running Supercar 3’s which are great; however, downpours at highways speeds will cause hydroplaning, so you must adjust your speed accordingly when caught in that situation (i.e. drop down to like 55 in pouring rain that your wipers can’t even keep up with)

I'm running 305/35/20 (Pilot Sport 4S) in the rear and notice and little more push in the turns but nothing significant. I don't autocross or road race at the moment so not a huge concern.

Looks like im going to order the Firestones in 305's for the rear and the 285's for the front. Hope they do better in the rain and I don't loose too much grip when the roads are dry . Going to be strictly a street driven car, no track days .

Maybe 10.5 or 11 fronts
And 11’s or 12’s rear in either 20’s or 21’s
Still up in the air
Im on full BMR suspension with 32mm sway bar plus Pedders supercar coilovers

Firestone 500s aren’t good for grip. But for the street probably ok. These cars will out handle safe speed limits as it is. When I ran 275/305 years ago with peddlers coil overs and bars, I had to put front bar soft with the big rear bar. And stiffen rear rebound to get rid of mist of the under steer. But on the street a bit under steer is good for safety.

The Firestones are good street tires, hold their own in the rain, and don't turn into que balls when the temperature starts to drop. That said, they suck for autocross because they take a bit to warm up.

As far as balance goes, a square setup is the way to go, even with a stiffer bar in the back.

I’m also in the market for new tires and I like the look of 285 /305 set up . FYI Firestone indys are w rated 160 mph max our 1les came with Goodyear’s (y) rated over 186mph .

Yes the Firestones are a bit of a compromise over the Goodyears , but since I don't track it and want to drive in the rain when needed they will work for me . How do you keep from bending rims on SI ,my memory of driving my 1987 350 IROC Z28 in SI back in the 1980 was busting sidewalls and bending rims . I wouldn't worry about doing more than 160 ,unless you turn off or reset the factory governed speed limit. From what I understand with stock aerodynamics these cars get real floaty at 160 and above and aren't safe at anything faster than 160 .

Currently running Nitto Invos at 295/315.
I was going to run 295 square but sales guy at discount tire discovered the 315 was over 40 bucks less per tire then the 295 plus I do like the staggered look, so I went with it thinking the rears would be wearing faster then the fronts.

After 6 track days, they have plenty of meat on them and they handle track abuse well as long as the pressures are set right.
There is understeer but not as much as I was expecting and I can still rotate her with the throttle. I image with stickier DOT tires or slicks, there would be more understeer.

Anyone running 305 square on the 1LE wheels? I heard you can squeeze 305s on the front 10.5 wheels without rubbing.
