Most of the fastest Camaros are autos. Not stock.

most of the fastest cars at any track are auto. my buddies brother has a nova that runs 8 second 1/4 miles and its not a manual nothing wrong with manuals though, i love them and they have there place in the market but if we are talking strictly straight line speed the auto will almost always beat the manual BECAUSE of driver error. 98% of these guys on this forum who have a manual camaro think they are Dale Ernhardt reincarnated and i hate to break it to 98% of you, youre not.

When it comes to speed, it is a big jump.. drove a MT 2LT for a while and test drove the L99... you just might be willing to give up the stick. Those paddle shifters are pretty fun... get it up to speed, drop it a gear or 2 and floor it... fun stuff. It does seem that you really want the stick.. and I would try to see if your father might budge. Tried their hardest to convince me to go with an automatic my parents did... Succeeded they did not. I absolutely hate driving in traffic... But I would hate it more if I lost MT on my Camaro. Obviously you don't plan on restricting the SS to the city... to me it would be well worth it once you get a chance to.... find new roads |

I purchased my auto last summer after driving both the manual and automatic versions of the SS. Both were nice but I decided on the auto. And do not let anyone tell you this thing is not fast. I changed the mufflers over to the GM performance mufflers, added a CAI, and purchased a Range to resolve the AFM. I'm good to go. Just returned from a 3000 mile trip and let's just say, I'm glad I had an automatic. I got into several traffic situations where a manual transmission would have been a disaster. Sticks are fun and I've owned many of them. In fact, my SSR is a stick. However, there has been several time when I've wished it was an auto. I love shooting around town with the SSR but I would have been very pissed if I would have taken it on this last trip. Probably would have had to replace the clutch. Just my 2 cents, your mileage may very.
Peace, Mj |

The definite answer is that up to 4000 rpm, the range you will be in 99% of the time, the L99 makes MORE horsepower. It has a flatter torque curve due to variable valve timing. The extra 26 hp on the LS3 is a peak at around 5000 rpm.
Plus, unless you are en expert, the auto will be quicker in a drag race. I have driven manuals for 40+ years, but I love the A6 tranny. |
