What stock parts will need to be replaced?
I wonder if any one has, of if GM even released this info yet on how much HP/TQ can the rear axle, transmission, engine itself handle? If anyone knows it would really help me out. Im currently running 575 RWHP through my IROC through a doug nash tranny, rebuilt 406 stroker, and a completely rebuilt rear axle because the stock parts couldnt handle all this. I want at least 600 - 650 through my 5th gen but I don't want it to become a huge project like my IROC did. I wont be ready to buy one until mid 2010 so ill have plenty of time to find out and by then it should at least be known if there is going to be a Z28 because that will solve all my problems. If anyone has any of this information I'd really appreciate it.

Nobody knows much yet, but I was told it was holding up to 475rwhp without a problem yet. That is already an improvement over the 3rd and 4th gens, but 600-650 you would be on borrowed time. Expect to need an upgrade for that kind of power.

check some vette forums to see how much the stock rear/trans is holding up to their abuse (even tho it will get more abuse from our heavier car)

I guess that would let me know for the transmission but it wouldnt help much for the rear axle.

I could of sworn i read somewhere that the base vette uses the same exact 6 speed that will be either the manual or auto. I dont feel like looking it up but I'm almost positive i read that. As far as the rear axle i know that it wouldnt help.

I think that 8.5" ring gear will have a lot better chance than the glass-jawed 10-bolt did. Since wheelhop has been eliminated, I think I'd be more worried about the tranny. If you keep the Torque Management I think it'll have a good chance at surviving a while though.

Well there is only one way to find out. We should know early next year. I think there is a member here that is gonna upgrade the engine right out of the box.

I read somewhere that the TR6060 that will be available in the Camaro can handle about 450lbft torque. However manufacturers ratings usually have at least a 10% margin of error, that's what they teach in engineering when it comes to that type of application to always give a ten percent margin of error. I honestly can't remember where I saw the torque rating specific to the TR6060 being produced for the camaro I would give a link otherwise. The thing to remember is that the TR6060 trannies are application specific so depending on how much torque the car produces versus how much the car weighs they (tremec) will produce the ideal transmission for the application, to save weigh this may mean that they don't leave a lot of room for extra torque at least not huge gains.

You've got me thinking now. I hope the entire drive train won't have to be replaced. I plan on putting about 480 at the rear wheels at the get go, so if I have to replace everything behind the engine to do so, I may just buy a 'Vette instead. We'll see.

Some of you guys are a little optimistic...
600RWHP (or even smike07's 480, when launching HARD/slicks)on a stock IRS on a $30K car... Cars with that kind of HP have been designed from the factory to handle more HP and torque. I do think that there will be upgrades and the life of the rear depends on the application. |

I LOVE reading these...because back in 1982 when the Z28 was released with Cross Fire Injection that 305 was rated at 165hp!!! And the 82 Trans Am? 145hp! Yup....no lie....
And now we have this new "Super Star" Camaro coming to the table with 400+Hp....I am not sure what model I am getting, but I do know that I am going to be damn happy with it..... |
