Transmission Cooler routing options and affects on engine temp
I'm planning on installing a stall converter on my L99 with some modest mods. I've read till I can't see straight but have some questions hopefully someone else has experienced and can chime in.
I know I can route through the radiator and then through the new external cooler. I also have seen where others have bypassed the radiator completely. Question 1 being, with a stall increasing trans temps, will the engine temp increase due to the higher heat fluid being introduced into the radiator? (My engine temp already runs high 200-teens and one poster mentioned this issue on road racing) Will a good stand alone stack plate 30-40k Btu front mount WITHOUT separate fan do a good job AND hopefully reduce the strain on engine temp. I'm trying to avoid adding an oil cooler as well. Any thoughts or actual experience will be appreciated. Last edited by pony; 08-24-2018 at 09:54 AM. |

Short answer is No it will not change engine temp.
On my GTO I'm running a 5k stall I have my fluid going to Rad then cooler with no issues (no fan, cheap jegs cooler). In my other cars I have always just ran through the cooler and not the rad. Either way you'll be fine.

3800 stall wth an ADM transcooler run straight to the cooler. They include some capped tubes for the radiator cooler to keep it from junk up in there.
The trans still warms up quickly, helped by the stall, but never gets past 170F on the street, 190F after back to back passes at the track. Unless yours is a DD and wanting help warming the trans on very cold days I dont see any benefit of running through the radiator.

Benefit is a more stable trans temp. Mine never moved around when I had mine routed like that. Now that mine i just running the aux cooler mine floats around like that. Just under 180* cruising and just over 180* running it.
