run flats?

Is it common for tire companies to come out with run flats after a few years of a new tire dimension on a car? I am thinking by the time I need tires, run flats would make sense for a car with no spare or jack etc. What are the disadvantages of run flats for daily driving? I think the Vette guys have had them right? I know nothing on the subject its pretty obvious.

they cost crazy amounts of money. Dont know if they still due, but they used to need to have a set up run on the car to support them. They dont last very long at all.......

I don't know much except that they tend to perform worse as far as traction goes, and have a much rougher ride because the sidewall is so thick, I would personally just get a spare tire kit from performance spare.

I have run flats that came installed on my Mini, the biggest advantage is that if you do have a flat you can still get home or to the dealer or tire shop, You also don't have the weight & space in the car of the spare and jack etc. Here's the bad news,....... (1) you can't repair them so after getting a flat you will have to have a replacement. (2) they are expensive you will probably pay $ 300 - $500 for 1 tire, (3) rubber compounds will always be limited to to the construction and the requirements needed to run on 0 pressure so they are not the best performance tire that can be had if that is what you're looking for, they aren't bad for everyday driving but it is a compromise. I'm sure the sizes availble is market driven so I don't know if the stock sizes for our Camaros are or will be available but a quick check with the major tire companys could probably answer that for you

Not true on number 1, I've spent years on the corvette forum, owned 3 C6's, as long as the damage is not on the sidewall it can be repaired.

I have them on the rear, sportmaxx 315's , they work pretty well, and I like that I don't need to be worried about losing a rear tire and being stuck...oddly enough, I have gotten 2 flats in the front. tire life on my first set of them was better than the stock Pirellis.
