Regular or synthetic oil?

...Sorry if this was already discussed, I did look for it in search.

What do you think is BETTER to use, Synthetic or Regular oil? I hear that using synthetic oil prolongs the engine life, but if you switch between types when the car is older, it can cause problems. so I want to know what I should use before i get it. it's a V6, I will put mostly highway miles on it

I used regular oil in my 03 honda i bought it with 14k miles on it in 03 and now it has 172k miles on it, i changed oil every 3k miles, changed tranny fluid, air filters, etc and it still runs good.
For my camaro i bought the lifetime synthetic oil change from the dealership. I wouldnt recommend the lifetime oil change but i would recommend synthetic

We took ours in for it's first oil change and the dealerhip pretty much told us that they would only use Mobil 1. I really don't have a problem with that, I don't use anything but synthetic in my Harley, it keeps the engine running cooler and certainly prolongs the life of the engine. If this were a $10k Toyota disposable car I might not care, but then I wouldn't drive one of those anyway .... : )

Owners Manual Says Synthetic

Check the manual. It states that synthetic oil (5W30) must be used.

I don't think it says that on the v6 the OP has.
I only run synthetic in my cars though. Have always used Mobil1. I was thinking about giving Royal Purple a try. Now to find a shop that uses it haha.

OP states it's a V6.

The V8 comes from the factory with synthetic. The V6 comes from the factory with dino oil. So in your V6 it's really your choice. In my V6 I changed the oil at 1,400 miles and put 5-30 dino oil in. I will change my oil again at 3,000 and put in Mobil 1. I will keep using Mobil 1 for the life of the car.

BTW, you can switch back and forth from dino to synthetic without doing any harm, but why would you? Just pick one and stick with it.

Your right , only the V8's are Factory Filled with synthetic oil like it says on the oil filler cap " Mobil 1 " ...
I did it just about the same way you are going to do..The only difference is that I changed the oil twice already with dino 5w-30 then I switched over to Mobil 1 / 5w-30 at 2500 mi. and will be sticking with Mobil 1 from here on out ! !
I added a Mobil 1 emblem under the hood , I was going to put it somewhere on the engine cover but it looked kind of awkward in different places on the cover due to the size & length of the emblem (but thats my own opinion)..

I have used Mobil1 Delvac 15W/40 in all my cars from V4 to V8 for the past 5 years with no adverse affects.

Personally I believe as long as you change the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months you can use regular oil unless the car specifically calls out synthetic.

You wouldn't want to void the warranty.

What about Penzoil Platinum Sythetic or Quaker State HP Synthetic oil. I only ask because it's going on sale this weekend for $3.99 a quart.

I put Royal Purple Break-in oil in my car at 278 miles. It says to run it for the required break in period (1,500 per manual) but NO longer than 2,500. After the 1,500, I will be keep using Royal Purple. They say you should not use the regular Royal Purple until after the engine is broke in. It's good for 12,000 or should be changed annually. I have the V6, so I am not required to buy stock in Mobil 1. I am sure it's really all pretty much the same stuff. I wouldn't use conventional, but would go for any kind of synthetic. I am sure it's all good.
