Valve Noise

At about 1100 miles on the OD I've noticed valve tappet noise when starting my Camaro 2SS A6. It last for a couple of seconds then goes away. I wounder if the AFM in the valve train assembly has any impact? Anyone else experience this?

Thanks for the input. I'm changing the oil this weekend.

Yeah, I noticed that for the first time today....L99 @ 600 miles. Start up, lasts about a second. I haven't heard that sound in many a year.

Probly just dry start but be sure to check your oil filter and the oil catch pan for rocker arm bearings that have fallen apart. I know this has happened to some LS7's.

Is GM still assembling engines through a "Net Build" process? I had a Malibu back in 2001 that had "piston slap" due to GM's change from matching pistons to cylinders to the "Net Build" process that assumes all pistons will fit equally into all cylinders. If the noise goes away shortly after start-up (a few seconds to a couple of minutes), then that might be the case as the piston is not as tight in the bore as when the engine is warm. The reason it does not last long is due to the combustion heating up the piston sufficiently to expand it more tightly into the bore. But, this issue has been around for years and not just with GM. Remember, you have explosions occurring inside a sealed environment and lots of metal parts interacting with one another, so there is going to be some noise. Remember solid lifters in an era long ago?

Yes, it sounds exactly like piston slap. I don't drive the car a lot, so there are some dry starts. That's when I heard it the most; when it sat for a few days before the first oil change.

Mines not piston slap, definitely valve tappet noise. Changed oil last week and still have valve tappet when starting for a couple of seconds. This to me is not normal operation. I'll find out when I take it to the dealer when after my list is full.
