Why all the worry over the year 2016???
The world is gonna end in 2012 according to the Aztecs. I for one plan on driving my Camaro straight to the gates of hell.

I don't know about every one else, but I'd be damn pleased to see a 2016 camaro with a ~5.0L DI V8 that is smaller and weighs less. If they could get by with 3000lbs that'd be one potent package and would go a long ways to getting the FE up there so it doesn't hurt the CAFE too much...

Toyota is already working on a hybrid sports car set to be released in 2011. Supposed to replace the Supra and have a 0-60 time of around 4 seconds... but I think that the fact it will be hybrid will null the possibility of a manual transmission. Maybe a twin-clutch like in the Evo is possible?

The largest impediment here is that GM probably won't be willing to invest its limited financial resources in a new or updated V8. Any reasonably solid rumors about adding DI to the current V8 family? |

I have the pickup I want. My Camaro's on order. With proper care, I'll never need another vehicle.

It looks like I better order before 2012...
I'd like to better understand how the government proposes the manufacturers get that high. The obvious answer is lighter cars and smaller engines, but is that what people in general are going to want? Not me, personally. I've about given up thinking about this because all it does is anger me...

its not going to be due to gas mileage because the technology exsist or will exsist by then. It will depend on consumer demand

The future cars will be smaller and lighter. Maybe not what us old farts want, but look at what your kids are driving. The consumer demand for these cars is in perfect sync with the 2016 timeline. Its right about then these kids will be dumping money on brand new cars, including a current-Civic-sized Turbo-4/hybrid Camaro. This old fart wishes he could get one now. I like the new Camaro, but wish it was a little smaller and a lot lighter.

As others have point out this is fleet average, and any stated goals beyond 2012 are very subject to change.
