v8 engine cover is functional or cosmetic only?

i just took mine off.. i guess it's about 2-3lbs. is it purely cosmetic, or does it help protect anything? wouldnt the engine dissipate heat better with the cover off?

Cosmetic only and I can see the heat dissipation improving a bit.

Most assuredly take it off, it is only cosmetic... There is also a cover on the intake plenum that can be removed if so desired, but it will make the valve train a little bit more noisy... It looks like the intake but there is soft foam under it to insulate noise...

If you remove the engine cover and do a heater hose relocate the top of the motor actually looks pretty good... and it looks more like it means business IMO...

I've actually got a fiberglass one painted Red Jewell Tint my wife bought me in Phoenix.... Don't use it either... It hangs on the wall in my shop...

Maybe it protects the hood from the heat?!

Lots of members run their 5th Gen without it to let more air circulate around the engine. Especially those who drive their car hard.

I saw a LS3 with the cover off, with valve covers. Thought it looked pretty cool.

I removed mine at about 300 miles. No issues. I like to see an engine when I open the hood, not a big piece of plastic.

That's what the insulated hood liner is for. That cover is nothing more than a cosmetic piece that helps dampen valve train noise just like the plenum cover.
