You need to move to Texas! We get ice...usually only a few times a winter & I mean "a few". If it comes in while at work...I head home before it gets bad & if it hits while at home, I just stay home til it melts... usually in a few hours! Course we have 100+ days in the summer!

Great video with the black ice Vash. What does everybody do wrong in it?? They hit their brakes as soon as they start sliding.

Anyways, not a Camaro but still has stabilitrack, our 09 Malibu is pretty damn awesome with the ST on. I always take a new car out to a big parking lot with not light poles when its wet and slick so that I can learn how the car will react because they are all different. With the ST on, its amazing at how well the car sticks to the pavement. It was VERY VERY hard to spin it out, if not impossible. With it off, it was a slight flick of the wrist and I was going around. ST is a great safety feature for sure and GM sure has improved it over the years.

WTF?? Why are you saying to get TWO different types of tires for the same car? Thats just asking for trouble especially if the rear end has more grip than the front.

Please, please, if you get snow tires, get all 4. DO NOT mix snow tires with regular tires as youll see some HORRIBLE results.

Why hasn't anyone told him that he'll end up spending more on tires than on a decent beater car for use in the winter.

by the way, where in indiana are you from???
this is unfortunate for you but, i think you will be able to hold your own in the car. i would be def. scared of everyone else and you can only be as careful as the next guy. As you saw in that video (funny BTW) people see other people stopped and they hit the gas pedal and brake late! But you can get into an accident in good/ dry weather so take your chances and go for it!

Cold + rain = Black ICE!!!!!

There was a day when all vehicles were big and only 2 wheel drive, everybody drove them in the winter and got from A to B ! My SS will have 18" Blizzaks, has traction control, Stabilitrac, 48/52 weight distribution, and an experienced RWD "Canadian winter" driver...... I will be just fine !

It matters not what kind of tire or wheel / traction control you have when it comes to ice. Nothing can grab ice no matter how it is marketed. When it is cold out and the tires are hard the ice cannot be gripped. In the video these people did not give ample time to slow down. Whenever the chance of black ice you have to gradually go letting the car roll not to get speed happy and thinking you only need 60ft to stop. Once you slam the break the car's force takes it on the path least resisted which is forward due current mobility and to no traction. The appropriate way is to cruise and take it easy, pumping the break so that all the weight is not shifted to the front in one slam, because your rear will go up and that 52/48 split will mean nothing and you will loose traction in the front. I would rather drive in snow anytime rather than Black Ice. I always try to look for the rail if i am close or curb that way i can slam into that avoiding people or other cars. Hope i never have to, Bella doesn't like hospitals!

"why hasn't anyone told HER"! lol

i've thought about that too. i just don't like the idea of having to plate two cars and pay insurance on two vehicles... in end wouldn't that be more expensive? the tires i would buy one time and use for quite a few years in the winter i would think!?! yes?

Winter tires last anywhere from 2-4 seasons depending on how often you drive them in warm weather.

Also, if you do put insurance on two cars with the Camaro being your weekend car the insurance is FAR cheaper and the difference will probably pay for the other car in a year or so.

i would only drive on them in the winter and have the others put back on at the beginning of spring. who knows what i'll do now... you've made a pretty good case about getting another vehicle for winter!

Pretty sure I'm getting a winter beater as well. Looking for a 4x4 something for around 3k I'm thinking... PL and PD insurance only. Shouldn't be too bad. Oh yea, and you take the insurance off the Maro for the winter.

but i would want to drive it when it's not crappy and snowy. no way could i see it sitting there all winter and not want to drive it when the suns shinin'!!! and i couldn't afford to spend 3000 dollars on a "spare" car! or even 1000...LOL! it looks like winter tires is the route i'm going to be going! that's okay....
