1le headroom

Hey guys does anyone know if there is a difference in headroom between a standard SS and an SS 1le camaro? I know the seats are different so I wanted to ask here.
Thanks so much!

Headroom issue generally only arises with the addition of a sunroof. If one has any desire whatsoever to drag race, Autocross, or track, do not get a sunroof as helmet room becomes virtually nil.

Not according to technical specs, and I didn't notice any difference between my car and the ZL1s and SS 1LEs I sat in (granted, those were just shorter trips).

The sunroof, however, does make a big difference, to the tune of 1.5-2 inches, which is good to know before making the decision about it.

Thank you both so much! I’ve sat in a 2020 2SS without a sunroof and I fit fine. (Im 6’3 so I was a bit worried” and a 2018 with a sunroof was a no go haha. My current one has a sunroof and I got aftermarket seats to fit better.

I concur. The sunroof does make a huge difference though. I wouldn't want a sunroof in any Camaro for that reason. A friend of mine had an SS with a sunroof and it had significantly less headroom in it than my 1LE does.

My 1LE ended up having a sunroof, 100% not by choice. I got a really good deal on the car and ended up getting everything else I wanted, including a PDR while it was on constraint. I'm 5-9 190lbs and I can wear a helmet in the car. Sunroof takes a lot of headroom away for sure. That, and the fact that it puts more weight higher in the car makes me think they should have nixed the Sunroof option for 1LE cars.

I almost feel like when the Recaros broke in they sit ever so slightly lower than the standard SS seats in the used cars I test drove, but it may just be poor recollection or just an illusion due to the deeper buckets the seats have. They do sit much lower than the day I picked it up though for sure. Comfy as hell after a couple thousand miles!

Yep, ditto on the sunroof: avoid at all costs! I bet the Recaros are actually slightly lower than the standard SS seats, at least once they break in (which they do). BTW, you can order the Recaros in an SS without the 1LE option. I'm 6'1" and have zero issues with headroom in my 1LE, even with a helmet on. That's waaaaaaay different than in a Camaro6 with a sunroof or any Camaro5, in which I simply don't fit.

Not to beat the dead horse on the 1LE sunroof headroom deal but it’s true that it cuts down on clearance. Having tracked my 2SS 1LE w/sunroof I can say that it wasn’t a big deal but I’m only 5’ 10”. However, I did have to tilt the seat a notch or two back as the headrest was interfering.
On another note, what a car the 1LE is on track! But, that’s a whole ‘nother thread!

There's a few issues that tend to conflict here.

For some reason, a lot of people try to jack their front seats up as high as they go, regardless of what vehicle it is. To see as much of the hood or something as possible. It's not going to happen in a Camaro, you have to get used to that. If you are real short, yes, you are definitely going to put the seat up some, but I find in cars like this people in the "correct" range would rather put the seat way further up and forward/upright, rather than take what was designed for the car.

With helmet, at 5'11", I'm just clear of the sunroof. It's not a lot of room, but I'm also not banging my head or feeling it ever. You aren't going to fit much bigger than that with a helmet. These helmets are pretty thick, so if you will never race, you can definitely fit a few more inches in there no problem, but if you are going to race, could be a problem.

The mohawk roof will definitely give you more clearance.

One interesting thing to note. If you do wear a helmet, there's virtually no way you'd be able to get out a side window. Helmets don't fit through the window.

I do love having the sunroof, it was one of my requirements, to make the care feel more "open" that it is, also to bring more light in...when I want more light in, which isn't always, but nice to have the option.

Me too. I don't like the way the headrest pushes my head forward when I'm wearing a helmet, and I didn't want to tilt the seat back further because the side bolsters on the Recaros are then not as effective. So....

Thanks to the this forum, I learned that you can turn the headrest around backwards (once you learn how to release it); the new angle works much better with a helmet on, but if you leave it that way for street driving (too much of a pain to swap it continually due to have difficult it is to release the catch pins), you need to add a pad to the readrest in order to have proper protection against whiplash.

I did a lot of research on this before I placed my order. For me it will be a street ride mostly and I might put it on a track. If I do then a helmet is do-able but can be restrictive. If I was buying a track car then I wouldnt want a sunroof.

Something to keep in mind is that we all have different body types within the context of where one’s “length” is made up. Some have longer legs and shorter torsos - these people would likely have better luck with the helmet. If there’s any question whatsoever, make sure to sit in one with a helmet before purchase.

I'm 6'6" with a 35" inseam and I fit the 1LE comfortably with no sunroof and a helmet. Visibility at traffic lights always sucks but no issues otherwise. I drove a 2ss non 1LE also with no sunroof and non-Recaros and had very similar headroom.
