Gears for turbo car
Are 391s to much for a manual turbo car?

3.45 to 3.73 to 3.23 in my M6 TT. Yes, I believe the 3.23 is best suited for manual turbo application.

I had 3.91's before I swapped to 3.27's. For highway pulls I would run out of gear on the top end running most cars. Then there was spinning all the time, but I was on street tires.

I run 29" diameter 18"x10.5" DRs with my 3.23. Still have to be carefully with the clutch so I don't light 'em up. Telling you, man, don't do anything over 3.73. The 3.91 will only produce smoke.

I have 3.70 in my 9" rear. I regret that choice. 1st and second are useless. I should have done something in the 3.00 to 3.25 range

By extending the rpm range this softens low end so the gear is now able to be used and the 3:45 will give better leverage at top end speeds. This also helps to unload the engine internals and heads stay clamped better. ( head gasket retention) . To do this all bolts and piston pins need upgraded or evaluated for strength/ application. I'd rather have 7200 rpm and 3:45 gears at speed as opposed to 6250 rpm and 3:08-3:27 gears. |
