Welp.. never doing that again.

Got there at 5:45, and there was a long line, per usual. However, when they finally started allowing cars in, they kept waving a block of us around until finally the lot was full. When I approached an official to ask how things are determined, whether it's first come first serve, or if there actually is a standard for cars, he told me it was first come first serve, as he was letting in a bunch of random crap AFTER telling me the lot was full. When they let in a beat up old volvo station wagon with peeling paint, sagging headliner and nothing special about it at all.. I about lost it. I asked why they weren't letting my car in, and what I was told was that it's just a Camaro.. nothing special about it. When I scoffed and pointed out it was a Z28, and it's definitely plenty special, he said nope, it's just another worthless plastic car.

It wasn't cars and coffee... it was Mustangs and s***lords. So much trash cars there (edit: by trash, I mean trashed. Mud covered, dented accords/civics etc.).. they even let someone with his beat up work truck, dents; tool box and all get in. Sigh.

Right when the Mustangs all started redlining as a group did the wife and I decide to leave. They can keep their One-Direction-Haircut, V6 ricer wing and sticker-covered, tinny-sounding exhaust group. 3 full rows of Mustangs. Now I remember why I stopped going 5 years ago.

Lesson learned. 6 years since I last went, and good riddance going forward. The amount of insults thrown Chevy's way, not just Camaro, was really stunning.

My wife got a kick out of my running commentary as we walked around, so there's that at least. Certainly regretted waking up that early for such disappointment, but it is what it is.

Looking at moving to the Austin area in about 3 years when I retire, how is life there? Seasonal weather ok? Any local area issues?

Well, it'll be plenty hot, so not having A/C will cause you to not want to drive.. ask me how I know. lol

Other than that, Austin is weird in a good way. I drive down there regularly and while there are the usual nutjob Fast & Furious groups around, the beer scene is excellent and it's pretty pleasant. Not cheap though.

sell your snow shovels and saucers/toboggans, heavy coats before you move
you will like the winters here, summers not so much I grew up near Chicago and miss northern summers. Austin is a very Blue city in a sea of red Texas, no state income tax and roads are better. IDK Austin that well but DFW has a lot of non natives like myself
PS Austin is growing like crazy and is getting alot of traffic I'd recommend living out and away from the city

Life is good in Austin. You can drive your Z/28 year round, plenty of good driving roads in the hill county plus track days at COTA are always good fun. It does not rain too much, ocassional ice storm every few years or a trace of snow. Austin is very outdoor oriented and citizens have a decent amount of involvement in local government. There is a fair amount of interest in enviromental protection in Austin proper, especially anything involving trees, the aquifer, creeks or lakes. Building permits take a while to get and there is a lot of regulation. Water restrictions are a big deal so watering your lawn 24 x7 or dropping a few 100 gallons of water on a car wash every other day in your driveway is not going to happen. Economy is very good, even in 2008 it held its own. The economy is primarily based on government, education, research and technology. I think unemployment is currently around 3%. The further you get away from Austin the more bang for your buck you will get in real estate. Austin is fairly liberal leaning and things get more conservative the further out you go from the city. There is no shortage of live music or good food. The work force for the most part is highly educated and competition for jobs is robust. Public transportation is fair, could be better, bikes and bike lanes are popular here and well used. Roads are in good shape, not perfect and traffic congestion can be hellish during rush hour especially during the school year and when state government is in session. People are friendly and socially accepting of all kinds and you will be hard pressed to not have a good time living here. There are no pro sports teams. Your last question is a bit open ended so PM me for specifics.

C&C in Austin recently relocated out to COTA, no shortage of parking there and the event is managed appropriately, there is no cherry picking who gets in at what time.
