Exclamation Camaro SS 1LE brakes suck (change my mind)

Good morning Al,

I just had my first track day with the SS 1LE Camaro!
Everything was great except the brake temperatures.
I boiled the brake fluid (Motul RBF600)

-----------------------------------------------------

'18 Camaro
  • Fluid: Motul RBF600 bled 2 days before event
  • Pads: Raybestos ST-43
  • Caliper Temp = 500 F (after cooldown)
  • Rotor Temp = 650 F (after cooldown)
I thought the SS 1LE was FOR lapping days. It's designed with coolers, 2-piece rotors, 6-piston calipers, brake ducting...
And it STILL boiled the racing brake fluid (I exited the main straight @ 60mph into the grass).
-----------------------------------------------------

So i come to you looking for recommendations.

Thank you kindly,
~ Sean

sounds like your too hard on the brakes or you need to try the stock pads again

Less brake, more gas.

Are you sure all of the cooling ducts are in place? Something doesn't sound right...

Maybe the bleed didn't get all the DOT3 out?

Did you bleed both the inner and outer of each caliper?

Maybe different pads and Castol SRF?

I'm guessing you had some stickier tires than stock as well as the race brakes.

If that's true, you are asking a brake cooling system that was designed for stock tires and pads to handle race brakes and maybe slicks or something like a cup tire?

Not surprising they would fade. Either upgrade the brake cooling or go back to stock, the car should do just fine with proper brake burnishing.

Tires are OEM Goodyear Supercar3
HP = Stock
Fluid = Motul RBF600
Pads = Raybestos ST-43

I upgraded the fluid and pads... thought those 2 things sorta go together.

if you didn't disassemble the entire system and drain all the dot3 you have a bad mix of fluids.

The Raybestos ST43 pads are the reason. I run them on my Gen 5 1LE. You cannot expect “stock like” brake temps when using full race pads. While the OEM air management does a fine job cooling the brake rotors, the calipers will still see the higher temps.

This issue is certainly an operator head space and timing issue.

This is operator error, nothing to do with the car.

You need to manage your brakes. They will get hot and possibly boil fluid and or have pad overheating and that is something that you need to manage.

The brake pedal is not an on off switch.

I also recommend to use better brake fluid such as Endless RF-650 ,Castrol SRF, or Brembo HCT64

No brake problems with stock pads and SRF and braking at COTA from 140+ mph, 5 sessions per day
