What fell off?

2010 Camaro V6 Automatic. See attached photos for what came off.

Situation:
Im changing both REAR wheel hubs. Driver side replacement went fine.

For passenger side I had the new hub installed and realized the ABS sensor wouldn't fit in. There was a metal ring in the way. I took the hub back off and the ring (see photos) was loose. It seems to be a part of the cv shaft, as can be seen in the attached images of other driveshafts.
It got smashed when I reassembled the new hub, I do not think I can or should reuse this part. I tried to bend it back and I think it's no good.

Two questions:
1. Am I okay to reinstall without this part?
2. Any idea if I can get this ring without having to buy a whole new CV shaft?

My guess is that it is a grease seal. Your only choice is to replace it with a new one.

Update: I believe it's a "dust shield" or "oil shield", its purpose is to keep debris from getting onto the ABS tone ring.
@patternpilot, you were headed the right direction.
  • I found similar examples of this problem on the internet (mostly toyotas?), see attached images.
  • The front hubs actually have something similar, see attached images.
  • Dealer diagrams don't show it as a separate part. Autozone/Oreilly/Advance all came up with nothing, even after showing them the part. ugh.

I reassembled everything without the part, and it drives perfectly fine. No noise, no warning lights. I suspect eventually without this part it may gather debris and throw an ABS sensor code. Or I could just buy a whole new CV axle :(
