I just masked mine off. My goal was not "extra corrosion preventative" or anything like that so I didn't see any need to paint the entire surface (like the tops.) I was only concerned with what could be seen from the back and sides.

Masking started by just draping newspaper across the top of the mufflers and then working from there to make sure everything that I didn't want to have overspray would be protected. Actually, to back up a step, the real start point for me was to clean 9,000 miles of road grime off the surfaces I intended to paint. I used nothing more elaborate than plain ol' Windex with Ammonia and a Scotchbrite pad. Then I poured rubbing alcohol onto paper towels to remove any residue left from that.

The BBQ paint said primer was not recommended so that was a step I didn't have to worry about. Then I just applied light coats going back & forth between the mufflers until I was happy with the result. This paint is very forgiving and evens out effortlessly. I was very surprised how closely it matched the painted metal guard around the gas tank.

Less than $15 / less than an hour.
