Yep, previous owner chopped off the stock mufflers.

From what I read that was basically a sound mod and barely netted any hp or tq. From the system I have in place what could I do from here to get some ponies. Would of cat or ax back would benefit me better?

LT headers will net the most power over a cat back. You will need a tune though. Axle back, like you said is only a sound mod.

For added pick up, get some high flow cats or go catless (if legal). Cats are where most of the restrictions reside. And you will really feel the improvement. Even with a 3" cat back the gains are negligible if you don't do anything with the cats.

But this is the actual car used in TF3. Looks like a stock auto exhaust, but just muffler deleted.
