How to Title a Garage-Built Car?

Let's say I have a a body-in-white, or a frame, or a unibody of a muscle car. I don't have a VIN. I go onto YearOne or some other place to buy body panels and assemble to car. How do I go about getting a VIN and making this a streetable car?

i think you have to go to DMV and have them inspect the vehicle to obtain a vin number. it would probably be a good starting place anyway.

+1

You can get a builder's title after DMV inspects and assigns a VIN.

It varies a lot from state to state. Here in Kentucky it is pretty easy but in some states it is a colossal pain. Hit up your local county clerk or DMV. They should be able to answer or put you on the right track.

Local is isn't local in the Navy.

When inspecting, should the vehicle be prepared with full emissions, or are the restrictions lower for a new Camaro body-in-white or a similar vehicle?

That is also something that will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. This kind of stuff is all regulated at the state and local level.

I have a question about this, when someone change the engine or repainted the car with another color. Would you get a ticket for it when you get pulled over and the registration and the car doesnt match?

Actually, I was thinking about that. What is the minimum requirement for a VIN to be transferred. If I am to get a VIN from another car, why not a pre-1973 non-emissions car?

That begs the question: what is the minimum amount of original material to constitute a car so I can transfer the VIN?

Highly illegal.
VINs cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
In Ca, DMV would issue an ID number to a custom built vehicle. It will be registered as a SPCNS which means special construction.
Here is the red tape to get it registered..

Yes. Very illegal. I would imagine if you built it street-able at first to get your vin an title assigned, then work from there, you'd be fine.
