Thought I would share this: in concern for oil temps while tracking, I sent a oil sample to be analyzed for heat damage and the general condition of the oil. This sample included 5 track days with oil temps around 280-290 and 3300 miles on the oil. The results showed that the oil had no signs of heat damage and maintained its viscosity. Additives package in the oil were still at good levels providing adequate anti-wear protection.

Thoughts/discussion...

We have a 4.5 gallon dry sump system with a cooler installed on SSsoon's LS7 Camaro. Temps in Virginia have been low 50s high 40s. We are still adjusting the tune, and have done nothing but street driving. The highest temp reading we have to date is 120 degrees on our gauge. The factory gauge has not moved. More details ssssoon.

Note: Oil is 15/50 Mobil 1

What oil are you using?

This is pretty good news, especially considering all the bad rep given to Mobil 1 5W-30. I'm using 0W-40 for hopefully a bit better protection/lubrication at higher temps, which supposedly has better shear resistance with its revised formulation.

I was considering the switch to 0w40, I already have the oil and will probably do it.

Wondering if GM wasn't seeing any problems with oil condition and decided against a proper oil cooler?

We already have a pretty costly engine oil cooler that comes standard with the car; why they don't make the heat exchanger part of it big enough to handle the load is beyond me. They did increase the size of that exchanger on the Z/28, but since the load is also increased by LS7, it's also suffering the same fate.

Mobil 1 0W-40 has been the factory fill for Euro-market Corvettes for a long time now (including C6, which uses our engine family), so I am confident it would work well with our engines.

Pete, above you say 15W/30 but all your other posts you reference 15W/50. Was the 15W/30 a typo and you meant 15W/50?

Thanks.

Guys,

Just wanted to give you a heads up that I ran my car at the track last weekend with the new dual oil coolers, mounted to either side of the radiator, with custom shrouds to suck cool air through them. The results:

Before the oil cooler upgrade: 290 F oil temp in 3 laps, then had to back off
After the oil cooler upgrade: 220 F max oil temp, while running hard the entire weekend!

This set up kicks ass. I'll write it up when I get some time.

BTW, I'm running Shaeffer 5W/50.

Amazing results! What temp is your thermostat set at?

I should also add, if you're reading temps in the sump (not in return line from the cooler), I think you can very safely switch back to Mobil1 5W-30 : )

Thanks man. Coolant stays at about 205 F all day. I'm not sure on the thermostat.

Oil temp is read at a sandwich plate above the oil filter.

crush,
how'd you plumb the coolers and where is your temp sender?

my temp results are similar to yours
I've not run a track weekend with the cooler yet, will do that on the 7th, but I've noticed that the temp normally stays around 210F. when driving "spiritedly" the temp keeps under the 230 mark on my gauge.
my in and out is from the ports just above the stock filter, my temp sender is on the "hot" side, before the oil goes through the cooler.
