CASTROL SYNTEC

was just in the States and shopping at the Walmart. noticed they had Castrol Syntec, now called Castrol Edge on for $21.00 for 5Qt. it is still in black bottle, and has the Dexos approval. pretty damn good deal for synthetic oil, i believe i read some where it is better than Mobil 1..time to stock up. Castrol Edge in Canada is $54 plus tax a jug here...

Well, there are two types. Castrol Syntec is now Castrol Edge with syntec and then there is the old Castrol Edge, which is now Castrol Edge with Titanium. Neither are dexos certified; they just meet the spec. There is a difference.

It "meets" the spec, but it is not "certified" dexos. I am correct. GM has a list of the oils that are "certified" dexos. Just "meeting" the spec isn't good enough. Here is that list. You'll note that NONE of Castrol's oils are on it.

Point-of-Order: Dexos specs did not officially "exist" until 2011 Camaros; Technically, our 2010s only require the older GM spec (can't recall it right now), which Castrol does officially meet. Castrol probably just didn't want to pay GM's extortion to be listed Dexos1. As far as I recall, there is no technical merit to Dexos over the old spec, it's just more CAFE crap (could've missed something, though--I quit paying attention since I'm runnin' 2010 rules).

just got this back from CASTROL:

Dexos™ 1 is GM’s latest gasoline engine oil specification required for all GM
Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC vehicles starting with the 2011 model year.

Castrol Edge with Syntec Power Technology and Castrol Edge with Titanium FST
Technology both exceed the performance requirements of GM’s Dexos™1
specification in the 5W-20 and 5W-30 grades.

Castrol Edge with Syntec Power Technology and Castrol Edge with Titanium FST
technology will have limited availability until March 2011. Castrol suggests
contacting the retailer to ensure availability.

Castrol will not officially be licensing Castrol Edge and Castrol Syntec.
Castrol will guarantee their performance in GM gasoline engines that recommend
Dexos™ 1 approved engine oil.

I told you, man. GM's list isn't bogus. It's too bad Castrol won't get licensed, though, I'm sure they are a good oil.

I have always used Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles with success.
Walmart has good deals on five quart bottles of Mobil 1 too.

To the best I can discover on the web synthetic oil in the US for the major brands, Castrol, Mobil1, Valvoline, etc. can be called synthetic even when made from crude oil as a result of the legal battle between Mobil1 and Castrol. Mobil1 wanted Castrol to stop advertising Edge as synthetic as it was made from highly refined crude oil whereas Mobil1 at the time was made synthetically from gases not crude oil like Amsoil and REDLINE. Mobil1 lost this fight and so Castrol called Edge (or Syntec) synthetic in the USA is made from crude oil base stocks. This is only true in the USA.

In Canada and the rest of the world Castrol synthetic (and any oil called synthetic) is made synthetically not from highly refined crude oil which may partly explain the higher cost in Canada.
