Not exactly sure on the exact specs, but we're talking the difference between a 10 bolt and a 9 bolt, for example.
- Xanthos

P.S. - I could just be remembering wrong, and the post in question was talking about the gear ratios, but I don't think thats the case. I'm thinking its more like, the manual V6 uses the SS rear with different gearing and suspension parts, where the auto uses a slightly smaller rear with no LSD.

Theres 3 types of rears

You have the open rear (single wheel pulling)

posi/limited slip rear (both wheels, more power is sent to wheel with least amount of traction)

Locked rear. Theres quite a few forms of lockers. Each does the same, but made for diff useage. Like you have a full spool, mini spool. These are straight line type rears, that dont like to turn sharp.

Then theres the detroit locker, and now even more streetable lockers like the powertrax no slip, and lock right. It's a gear/teeth/spring set up that locks together on the straights or hard throttle, then unlocks around turns.

The locked rear gives the same torque to both wheels un like stock posi/limited slip rears
Ok, I had a '68 Camaro with a 12 bolt posi. Believe me, it I left long dual black marks with my L 60s. From what I understand, it had a clutch pack that would
disengage when I would make a hard turn. You could hear it go chunk, chunk, chunk as it was making hard turn.
I thought, for an example, an car with an open rear end with one tire on pavement and the other on grass would give power only to the wheel on the grass, resulting in it spinning with poor traction.
With a limited slip, in this example, it would provide power to the wheel with the tire on the pavement.
With a posi-traction, I would have laid rubber on the pavement and did a sod job at the same time.

auto is geared taller so there's less need for the lsd right?

With Stabilitrak activated there is no need for lsd in a functional sense, because it has ASR. But the SS auto should have LSD I would imagine.

Stabilitrak doesn't do the same thing as a LSD.

ASR reduces tire spin by reducing power output and/or braking individual wheels and is great for preventing lateral skids caused by spinning rear tires. LSD puts more of your power to the pavement but doesn't prevent both tires from spinning (and therefore inducing a lateral skid).

ASR is good for safety and not getting stuck, LSD is good for accelerating faster. One does not negate the usefulness of the other.

Well said. If one negated the other, SS wouldn't have LSD either.

Ugh...where is it written in blood that the V6 Auto doesnt have LSD? Where is it written in blood that the manual does? All this yak is OT. Some of us noob would like the answer before it is too late to change our orders.
