Should I purchase a new one? Negatives of running without one? What does it do?

the ATI box has a new friction washer in a brown paper envelope. It isn't an extremely important part. If it worries you, you can reuse the stock one and put it on the ATI balancer if you can't find the one provided by ATI. The one provided by ATI is just a GM factory part.

I used the innovators west damper on mine. The friction washer did not fit that. So I left it off.

double and triple checked the ati box and it did not come with one.
next question: i used the chrysler 3 jaw puller to pull off the stock pulley. will this same puller work to pull off the ATI? doesnt look like it will. what type of puller will i need to get the ATI off?
thanks for all the help guys!

My ATI didn't come with a new one, so I re-used the original. Don't use a claw type puller on the ATI. It's aluminum. You need a special type puller.

use a standard harmonic balancer puller on the ATI unit. Go to Advance Auto or Autozone and get the free rental.

So there are no negatives to not installing the washer? I installed my ATI using instructions posted on here and it made no mention of the washer. I didn't notice one in the box either. I am running without it and so far no problems.

no negatives I have ever heard. I would be concerned if it weren't used with a factory balancer.

I just went and looked at my stock balancer and there is this washer. Its very thin. I also went back and read the ATI instructions and there was no mention of it that I saw. Probably not critical for the ATI. The ATI instructions, in my opinion, are pretty poor for what that damper costs.

The washer is critical for non-keyed cranks. It provides friction to avoid balancer rotation / movement on the crank snout. The LSA crank is keyed, making the diamond coated washer non-critical. The crank key will take care of the possible rotation of the balancer as long as there is proper torque on the crank bolt. I talked to Innovators West and they explained this. I am sure this applies to other balancer manufacturers including ATI.
