Let's do the simple math for General Motors right now:

196 new Z/28's left nationwide, according to Autotrader. (Likely a few more)

Sticker price $76,000
Clearance price: $55,000

A "loss" of $21,000 per car, times 196 cars = $4,116,000 write off.

Would they do it?
That's not the write off. Their basis in the cars is the cost it took to make them. Much less than sales price. Actually loss would be Much less.

Exactly. And that's why I put "loss" in quotations.

It really should be a no brainer, but that's me thinking on a micro level. There are a lot of other models sitting on dealership lots throughout the year. The Z/28 is just a small sampling.

Looks like 10 cars were sold off Autotrader at the end of the year. They're down to 188 new ones.

69L48Z27 and I are family members and took delivery of our new Z/28's same day at different locations. Funny side, we were at MCACN weekend prior to Thanksgiving where a new Z/28 was for sale for $55,326 but had no A/C and he told me "did you see that" which at the time I had not but it set the wheels in motion to act upon coming home. Now to your question, there was no discoloration problem but scratches and two door nicks on drivers door and as stated the engine compartment was not too enticing. I had a similar situation where I called and the price was what I was expecting but the sales manager informed me the car had a few scratches and issues, and would email me a couple pics. Upon review of emailed pics I thanked him for his honesty and respectively conveyed I was not interested. Another dealership was at $58,900 (A/C car) with the 20% rebate so that meant they were trying to sell close to MSRP as not much discount other than the rebate. Took me that morning to early afternoon and five dealerships before finding one that met my price criteria but bingo that one within 10 minutes accepted my offer and next day we took delivery. As discussed the main issue was too many of these sitting way too long and many outside. Purchased ours in Southern MD day before Thanksgiving! Do not see how a dealership without a huge hit could match the prices given our in November with the 20% GM rebate. That rebate was worth over 15K and then with other discounts over 20K off sticker. What's interesting is with that Nov. 20% rebate how a couple I talked to were not moving much beyond that 20% and only one was advertising the car at a great price. The car we purchased at the time I called was advertised at $73K.

I called and they said that is complete nonsense and there wasn't chance in hell they'd let those go for under 60.

Point being, there are dealers who WILL sell them. PM me and I'll give you some advice if you'd like. I'm afraid that with less than 200 of them still available and now past the 2015 year end, dealers may be less apt to get rid of them for deals since spring is coming and this is it. After these are gone, they're gone! You may still have a shot at getting something in the high 50's. it's worth a shot, it really is!!
Damn...0% and $58,500... awesome! I bought it on Black Friday and paid $58,500, but the entire discount would've been disallowed if I had opted for 0%. It was GM's rebate, not a dealer discount (highest volume Z/28 dealer in Dallas).

Guys I'd doubt that GM is losing anything; it was a bit overpriced to start with anyway. If Ford came out with GT350R at 63K before Z/28 was released, do you really think GM would still release it with $75K price tag?

There was a long article in one of the business magazines about the bottom line of Ferrari since Fiat is selling a part of its stake and making Ferrari public. In that article, the average cost of Ferrari 458 to the company, with all its luxury stuff and carbon fiber gadgetry, was estimated at $58K. It's sold for $300K. So no, don't worry about GM; just worry about your family when you shop for toys for yourself : )

Just some perspective from my POV. I shopped two dealers here in Houston for two weeks in December, pitting them against each other. The best price I could get on a new one was 73,000 out the door. There was a used 2015 with 2400 miles on it, that I had been watching. It had been sitting on the showroom floor since they took it in, in the color that I wanted. It had a clean car fax, and it still had it's 4 oil changes from GM, and the remaining warranty. The price was 53,999. With TT&L it was 57,000. I could not resist, even though it was used.

I will be calling Tom Stein today. If he says I made it up they just lost a very good costumer. Like I said before I wouldn't buy one for $30 brand new. He just told me that if I knew of anyone to let them know that they could tag one and sell if in the mid $50s. Last time I try to help anybody out. to much bulls..t.Take care.

Yes, you did try to assist members by communicating a good deal so even though I purchased one in November, thank you for the communication. I'm confident if the parties were all together it would be all a matter of timing when GM had the 20% rebate, etc. and no one was making anything up.
