Hence the word "specials" - maybe increase the hp and some street slicks as part of a package that would be available to certain people...you know, to make it a true factory car.

Well done to Chrysler for setting a lap record and an even bigger well done to the SRT group for creating buzz on a budget. The new viper is years out, but the Viper loyalists and automotive community will now be talking about Viper and the SRT group.

Imported from Detroit
Now a Viper Media Blitz

I can't wait to see what the marketing group at Chrysler does next.

Why did they do it? For the same reason SRT does anything ... because they can.

The technology in modern cars is incredible.
Thing is ... the Viper did it without much of anything in terms of technology. The most advanced thing on it is anti-lock brakes. No magnetically controlled shocks. No automated manual transmission. No stability control. No torque vectoring active differential. No exotic carbon fibre body.

Huge engine. Naturally aspirated. Steel body. Rear wheel drive. Manual transmission.

As for a production car not beating it in the near future ... the next gen Viper is expected next year ...

My guess would be about a 7:50, which slots it nicely between the CTS-V and the old Z06 time.

He just goes on about how manufactures are tuning their cars to be fast around the ring but it totally ruins the ride for regular driving the car from being too stiff due to them wanting a fast lap at the ring to sell cars.

Look for Top Gear UK season 17

Drive a ZL1 and let me know if you think it is too stiff.
Drive a CTS-V and let me know if you think it is too stiff.
Drive a viper... different story. They have always been too stiff.

Top Gear is great enetertainment...

Captain Slow definitely isn't the average automotive enthusiast.

JUST WOW!!! If GM gave the ZR1 a fixed rear wing and front/side spliters. Increase the boost to make a bit over 700hp, I bet the ZR1 would break the 6 minute barrier. Congrats to Viper fans, I love the fact that the run was made with a proper manual transmission.
