Which one would you do?
Hey all. I've got a 2010 A6 with most major bolt ons and most major suspension parts and drag radials. I'm thinking about one last upgrade (yah right). Just wanted to get a little opinion on what ya'll would do and the price difference vs bang for buck. Would you do a cam or gears?

Do you have a TC and a budget? Cam and TC are going to be 5x the cost. If money not an issue I’m going with cam first

Cam, converter and gears. You really need all of them to make it work, just need to decide which one first. I would do cam and converter together so if I was you I would do gears first. You need a converter with the cam unless its a small cam.

I did SS1 cam and 3.91 gears at the same time, I'm enjoying it a lot.
Might do a converter next year just to see what the hype is about. If you can only do one now most would say stall first, if it were me I'd do a cam first if it's small. |

If you are not going to do a converter, then do gears from now. Then save up for the cam/converter swap.

3.91 gears if not doing it all together
Then cam and a converter with appropriate spec to go with the cam. I did them all at once. My mods are in my build thread if you care to see how I did it.

bang for the buck huh?
I agree with Chris. About $1200-$1600 for gears. Then Cam and Converter. Shop will charge $3500-$4500 for cam and AFM/DOD delete and tune depending on what supporting stuff you do at the same time tunions, oil pump, etc. Converter is another $2000 at a shop... so $5500-$6500 total. I say if you are gonna put it in the shop to get some work done, go ahead and do it all at the same time to get the most out of it. With about 450whp and the other supporting mods, you can get this car in the low 11s maybe high 10s if conditions are perfect!!!

Thanks everyone!!! I'm still learning. Didn't know that it was probably best to do a stall and cam together, and definitely didn't realize the price of each installed. Looks like the best bet will be to do the gears and start saving for a cam/stall in the future if I decide to go that route.

With the cam, its also best to do the C5R Katech timing chain, dogbone dampener, and the trunnion upgrade. Lifters and new baskets, the proper length pushrods, hollow stem LS3 valves, some good springs, etc. Advice is to just get with GPI and they can get you a kit that matches your goals. Not to mention the transmission cooler to keep the heat under control from that converter. And then the BR30 break in oil. And if you make it over to the West Coast, go to Wongs
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^I got you covered, Christianchevelle, did I miss anything?

I see no mention of being an old school chevy rodder anywhere in your post though

Great post Chris!!! We're like kids in a candy store with our cars. Kinda like girls needing 50 pairs of shoes for every occasion. I'm thinking just wear a black pair, that'll cover everything!!! They're like us. If I get to the point where I sell my fishing boat I will definitely go crazy with adding mods to the car.
