a few other camaros, my friends firebird, a few trucks, and a couple mustangs. its not nearly as bad as everyone thinks. yes the engine is small, but its got more power than it seems. even when i lose, its not by much. Now that I think of it, that sounds like a good idea. Drive the 6 Cylinders for a while, then when I can afford it drop a kick-ass 350 into it.

I would imagine, so I'll be able to at least keep up with people...that ain't to shabby for a 2.8 Liter car. My moms 2000 Dodge Caravan has 3.3 Liters...

Go with a stroker instead of a 350. About the same money and a LOT more torque.

A stroked motor has a longer stroke in the cylinder? Meaning it goes farther down the piston than a stock motor?

The orginal window sticker and EPA rating in 1987 for a 2.8 5-speed was 17 City, and 26 Highway.

If you rated using modern standards it would be 15 City and 24 Highway.

What kinds of things should you replace on a car that has been sitting for a long while? And that has carbon buildup too?

I had a 89 2.8 V6 auto and my average was around 19 city and 24 highway.
Mileage was at 64,000. They'll get up and go. For the time they we're decently quick and they will smoke the tires through first and part of second

All filters and fluids, the battery, wiper blades, tires (dry rot), spark plugs, and anything that doesn't work.

I've got an old dustbuster ('90 Lumina APV) my uncle gave me with a 3.1l. My parents screwed me over with the title so it's been sitting for about 5 years now, I'll start it up every now and then, but things like the ignition coil got corroded so it runs a little rough from missing (ran perfectly fine when I got it, just needed the tranny replaced which I have). But the van needs pretty much all of this taken care of before it can be road worthy, so I just gave up on it.

Around me (central florida) there's a place called U Pull and Pay. Basically you bring your own tools to pull the parts, and they put which cars they have lying around online so you can see what they have before you go. They also post the prices online and all prices are the same, I just checked and engines go for $250 with a $25 core.

But if you want to deal with a junkyard, try to make sure the engine will be worth pulling and fixing up. Maybe even look into what you would rather do more, drive the V6 for a while, or just go for for the V8 from the start. If you get a junkyard V8 you'd probably put as much work into it as that V6.

Either way, with the VIN being coded for a V6, you'll pay the insurance of a V6, or at least we can get away with it in florida, we don't have emissions tests, inspections, or anything like that.

You may have something I suffer from occasionally called HRF* disease... It happens to all Camaro owners at some time and it's results are worse on city driving.
