And weather or not there is any bulge or not, I don't see the issue... Besides cosmetic preferences, I'd put my money on the more "bulgy" looking tire for best performance.

No, larger rim width or correct rim width better for handling, example for the 315s a 10.5 minimum or 11" rim is best.Squished tire on to small of a rim(hense the bulge) will squirm more in cornering and arent as stable. Will the 315 on a 10"rim work, yes, best combo, no.

And in the 275's as correct on a 10" I'd say bs, as that is the correct fitment for a 9". A 295 would be perfect for a 10"

I had 275/315 Invo's on my 20x8.5" and 20x10" when I had my SS. No issues with rubbing and it was flush. Minimal budging too with the Nitto Invo since they ran narrower than others.
