Hard Start/Extended Crank and Service Stabilitrak Message
I've been having this issue for a long time now. The car usually starts fine if it's cold, but the issue starts when I try to start it less than a few hours after a drive. I always get a really slow crank with a start after 4-5 rotations, or sometimes closer to 10. After it starts, I get the Service Stabilitrak Message on the DIC, the 3 traction control/stabilitrak lights illuminate, and the tach doesn't work. I also get the crank position sensor code, and sometimes a misfire light. I've already replaced the crank position sensor, since it's cheap and easy, but the last time I had it looked at they said the alternator tested bad. I'm thinking I'll try that next, but I wanted to ask first before throwing parts at it. The voltage gauge in my 4 pack gauges shows that it's charging, but it makes sense in my head. Battery is expended from a crank cycle, then next start there isn't enough voltage to start the engine and feed all of the sensors, so the crank sensor gets "bypassed". Am I on the right track here? Super annoying and inconvenient... May try adding another ground cable.

Yes. I would check battery voltage first (charging and not), then grounds, then alternator. If all that checks out, you will need some parts.

It don’t come easy.

Is it the original battery? I’ll bet it's come to the end of its useful days. Just a guess, of course.

this is a COMMON problem...chevy where are you on this??? theres a few threads on here. one in the v8 engine section right now. i have done everything from replacing the CPS sensor, starter, battery, add a ground, bypass the jump start post etc etc...nothing. some guys have had some luck with those. the other thread i mentioned says to look at the ground in the trunk and clean it. my car is in nthe shop for another issue but when i get it back ill try that. ive been chasing this for a long time. car only starts if it sits a long time....so there i am stuck at a gas station or some shit for 40min.

The most obvious potential problem is an old battery.
If you already changed that, people have found poor grounding cable connections or high cable resistance. Either way, the Service Stabilitrak message is the classic indicator of low battery voltage. |

just curious what is your battery voltage reading prior to starting in this scenario?

I had that issue too for a while and drove me nuts.. My fix was playing with the tune, start up timing and air flow I think. Maybe try that? |
