This doesn't sound good - I hope it's wrong...

i would agree....BUT..."Smale's hand-picked North America president Ron Zarella championed the launch of the Pontiac Aztek, a dismal-selling SUV whose laughable styling brought it to a quick end."

Considering everything that is going on, I think that it is going to be tough for all car companies the next couple months.

This article is not far from the truth. You need a true "car guy" to understand the "car biz." If not, then the same old mistakes will be repeated. You have to know, understand, and appreciate history in order to learn from it.

But, it is O.K. for Toyota, Mazda, Honda to offer government incentivised leases and artificially stimulated incentives to keep the plants open - been that way for years. Now GM does it and the world is ending. Sales are up and marketshare is at 21%...in a recession.
I wouldn't worry too much about GM...they are just playing the same game that everyone else has been playing for years - and being aggressive about it. The Cruze is a hit, so is the Equinox, Traverse, Silverado, Tahoe, Camaro, CTS...pretty much all of the recent products at GM are selling well against foreign competition...I would say that is a good thing.

i don't know, sounds like a bunch of people complaining that GM offers good quality at a cheaper price. isn't that what the consumer wants?
granted, if quality starts coming into question, then yes, GM has a problem. but this article, while hinting at risks of poor quality, doesn't make any real claims that any quality has actually been lowered. that being said, i have no brand loyalty whatsoever, nor do i care what country my car was made in. there are only two main reasons i went with my camaro and not a challenger, charger, mustang, viper, m3, audi, etc: (1) i could get the camaro exactly the way i wanted for exactly the price i was willing to pay. (2) multiple reviews of quality and performance were all awesome so there you have it, price and quality.

And I just got off the phone with my son who I swayed into considering a Camaro before a Honda Accord coupe.

Pfft. Everyone's using incentives. Plus average transaction prices are up across the board. It's definitely not something you want to rely on, but not uncommon to use.
And Liddell left because he wanted to be CEO and wasn't given the position.
