Chrysler scared of camaro
"We feel a "Thank you, Captain Obvious" is in order for this piece of news that was published all the way back on July 12th within the walled garden of Ward's Auto. The news is simply that Chrysler has confirmed it will build an SRT-8 version of the upcoming Challenger pony car. Chrysler, sorry, the NEW Chrysler, has never issued a release to our knowledge confirming it will sell the Challenger SRT-8, but again, we don't need one because they'd be crazy not to.
All current SRT-8 products use Chrysler's 6.1L HEMI V8, so we would expect the same powerplant for the Challenger SRT-8 producing 425 horsepower and 420 ft-lbs. of torque. However, considering how many high-powered variants of the Mustang are offered, and that Chevy will certainly offer a comparably high-powered version of the Camaro, we expect the SRT-8 to break rank with its siblings and have considerably more power than we're used to seeing in an SRT-8 product. In fact, we may reasonably expect all SRT-8 models to get an commensurate bump in power after the Challenger SRT-8 debuts in late 2009, especially with some like the Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300 switching from the current LX platform to a new one code named LY." hopefully puts pressure on chevy to put out a high power model earlier. 430 LS2 v8 would be a nice comparison against this srt-8 crap |

true!!
I wonder if Chrysler will be surprised to open the hood of their specimen Camaro(poor thing), and find a 430hp(more cause it's underrated) cranking LS3? |

I heard the Challenger is now a limited production vehicle, so that means dealer mark-ups GT500 style.

2 Items of news... 1. Limited production is verified... 2. Will not be sold outside of north america... Link to source Not too sure on the souce itself though... they quote the production model will be shown in 2008 and be available a year later.. aka 2009... and thats known to be false.. PS - this whole post should probably be in the general/other cars discussion forum.

I guess we will know for sure in Februrary, but as a limited production vehicle, it changes a lot, and there will be lots of markups GT-500 style
Even with no markups it won't be able to really target the Mustang/Camaro car segment which is unfortunate.

First off, I'm not a Chevy basher, just an equal Mopar/Chevy lover. With the lack of aftermarket for the new Hemi (STILL) , looks like I"m going to end up getting a Camaro over the Challenger since i'm sure it'll more mod-friendly.
Just wanted to chime in and say that you're misinformed IZMAN... CURRENTLY the SRT-8 is using the 6.1L Hemi, 425hp. That motor has already been out for a few years. The entry level V8 for the challenger is going to be the CURRENT 6.1L motor (425hp), while the SRT-8 Challenger is going to have the new 392ci 6.4L Hemi motor...the same crate motor released by Mopar a few months ago (550hp/underrated i believe). The SRT-8 version is supposed to compete with the Camaro _ _ (SS? Whatever model they decide to also call it) ...while BOTH cars regardless will be blowing the doors off of the Stang's GT500. I have a Ram 1500 w/ the 5.7L Hemi in it. Bolts ons only get you so far if you dont want to go on the bottle. As far as F/I goes, finding a well-tuned (new age) Hemi nowadays is like finding a needle in a haystack. The nazi PCM/TCM Mopar has slapped on the modern day Mopars are a joke. Like they feared, their lack of aftermarket will lead them back to the "Dark Side". Last edited by SJHemi666; 09-04-2007 at 04:35 PM. |

On a side note though, the Challenger is a fatty. Even if the LS(x) comes with 4xx hp from the factory, the 425hp in the Hemi is going to have to push a lot of damn weight off the line. If it's going to compete with the Camaro, it needs lipo before it hits the dealer lots.
