Is launching in second a tune thing or can you do it manually by putting it in second and then slapping it over to auto after launching? I'll be going to the track with a forged 416 and a Huron Speed twin turbo kit making well over 1000 and I am pretty sure I am going to need to do this.

You can just use the shifter. I have been told you can program it out but I can’t seem to get that done. I think the 17’s and newer may not have the same programming options as the 16’s.

That is exactly how you do it. That's what i did on a shitty track-prep day.

Launch in second, slap it into auto and let it go. That's how I've tried it.

Thanks everyone, that is going to be how I try it then when I go because I am sure first will be absolutely useless.

It can be tuned so you can leave it manual mode and it will hold what ever gear is selected but still shift on it's own once commanded mph is reached. I only use Manual mode now for making pulls. The trans shifts more consistently when you do not slap it over into drive. Unless you can do it at the exact same time every run( which is nearly impossible) or it throws off the shift timing. So it will either shift early or late.

And that is likely why it will randomly short shift on you. There is a narrow window on these transmissions to slap the shifter over into D and not mess with the TCM's shift timing.

I would like to know if anyone is making the tuning part work for a 17+ car. I was able to tune 1st gear out in manual mode which is great for pulling up, doing a burn out, staging and launching. I tried lowing the shift numbers in manual mode and no matter what I put in there it still tried to shift above 7000rpm. Fully automatic shifts (without having to slap the shifter over) at the rpms I choose while locking out 1st would be great. One less thing to have to think about while racing.

I did, he hasn’t tried a 17+.

I did look closer at my tune from back when I tried it and I did not have the part throttle mph’s set to exactly the same as the wot mph’s. I bet that was my problem. If I ever get back to working on my car I will have to give that a try.
