Is there anyone who has a L99 car with a bolt on car and 1/4 mile times then did a cam only (either LS3 conversion or VVT) and 1/4 mile times?
So....stock cammed L99 with stock heads and converter vs cammed L99 with stock heads and converter?
Yeah....I'd say a cam that can play well enough with the stock converter to cut a decent 60' might only be worth 2-3 tenths over the stock cam. That wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Stock cammed L99 with bolt on's and an aftermarket converter

vs

aftermarket cammed L99 with bolt on's, aftermarket converter (no heads, no intake, etc)

Just the cam being the only difference.

this is from Rhino's build

Quote:
7. Torque Converter. Since the car responded so well to the bolt on mods, I wanted to start working on the rest of the setup to maximize what power was already there. I installed a Yank SS32000 and borrowed some slicks on 17's (thanks Gretchengotgrowl). 388 rwhp

8. 3rd Track visit. Memphis here we go again! Weather was hot and humid. Bolted the tires up, and while the car was deadly consitent, it only picked up 2 tenths. The converter was too tight for my liking and it only 60'd mid 1.7's. Best pass of the night was 12.2 at 112. :(

9. Cam/springs. Enough of the bs, I wanna go fast. I really thought the bolt-ons and stall would land me in the high 11's, but it wasn't to be for me with that converter. So I installed a Mast SS VVT grind. 230/244 on a 111 lsa, along with beehive springs and a afm delete. 457 rwhp

10. Ported tb and ported intake. I decided to try and help the cam breathe up top by doing some porting work on the intake and throttle body. It paid off by helping power throughout the curve. 474 rwhp

11. V6 brakes, had to make room for track friendly wheels!

12. Track time again! Went to memphis to rip the car with the cam setup. I was very very impressed despite the weak 60'. 1.7 60', 11.39 at 121.42! Dyno numbers the day before the track run were 468 rwhp.

looks like he went 12.2 with slicks stock cam and a 3200 verter.... down to a 11.39 with the cam and yes a ported TB and stock Manifold but the gains are minimal from that. So even adding 1/2 a second onto his time to compensate for the differences... that shows what a proper cam can do with stock heads

he picked up .8 with ported throttle body, ported intake, Track friendly wheels and a cam.

But yes stock heads.

Id say .3 of that was the throttle body, intake and wheels (not sure what track friendly wheels means in this, could be lighter wheels, skinnies up front etc) so I would say .3-.5 from the cam the rest from the other.

I'd be happy with that.

Well not that it helps any now, but I will be doing this exact experiment next spring. I am full bolt ons with an aftermarket converter already. I have a couple more mods that I'm doing this year, (gears and PI), so then I will have my absolute fastest (bolt on only) time for my car. Next year I will add JUST the cam to my current set up and I AM expecting another .5 faster. Only time will tell.

This year however my goals are different. Just wanna max out my bolt on only w/stock cam set up.

Sounds good!

My plan is to stall the car with a trans cooler then tune this fall.

Over winter I want to do a VVT cam with just replacing the AFM lifters.

then see where things are.

I have ran 11.62 @ 117.90 with a 3200 Yank converter and bolt-ons only and will be installing a VVT cam shortly and I expect to run .5 to .6 tenth's faster in good air in the fall!
