Alternative to ZL1 add ons tow hooks

Hi all

I really like the ZL1 addons tow hooks. However, I just cannot get myself to pay between $100 an $200 for a simple long bolt with a hook at the front.

Is anyone using a good alternative?

cheers

I agree they are overpriced. I looked around for a long time suffice to say.

Fabricate your own perhaps?

Use the heavy OEM one or pay for the ZL1 hook--there's a good reason the OEM is built like that. If you get anything inexpensive and need to use it, you'll regret it when it bends or fails and your car is damaged.

I got the steel ZL1 AO version with license plate frame, great mod and value.

When I got my car with 2700 miles my factory tow hook was missing, I'm not cheap but $150 for a tow hook is insane, So I got a factory GM hook from Ebay new $38 bucks free shipping, and placed some maskin tape behind the eye and painted the hook with red brake caliper paint, and it looks great. And there's comfort
and knowing it's strong !

Dude, that is an awesome idea. I may have to paint the end of mine as well.

Bravo!

Here you go ! The Red caliper paint is from Dupli Color it has a 11oz caliper cleaner can, 8 floz red paint, brush, masking tape and stick . Now I've had this in my countertop for years, painted my chevelle 4 wheel disc brake calipers, and still have plenty.
Hook is as tight as it will turn, I used a metal bar to check it, it's not going anywhere.

Just wrap the bar or rod with soft material when you check it and if you need to do a touch up afterwards, just use your brush afterwards with a rag under the hook in your hand. It doesn't peel or anything, I have maybe 3 coats on it, when its drying it looks rough dont worry just apply coats after it dries to the touch it will even out. And also add a little blue medium lock tight(Tow hook threads while off and after painting) for insurance !

The eBay/amazon ones are just for show. I wouldn’t put any amount of stress on them.

The ZL1 Addon's hook is expensive but the quality is pretty nice. The paint has held up well, I even needed it once to get puled up on a flatbed. So it's plenty strong. Also I use it to mount my GoPro
