In the UK, the vehicle licence, which is more commonly known as a tax disc, comes in the form of a paper disc three inches in diameter to be displayed on the vehicle, and is evidence that the necessary vehicle excise duty has been paid for the specific vehicle. It should be placed on the left side of the windscreen if it is a four wheeled vehicle, but if it is a two wheeled vehicle then it should be placed in a holder fixed onto the bodywork.

The vehicle excise duty was introduced in 1889, and since 1920 it must be evidenced by the display of a tax disc.

Custom made tax disc holder

It's yet another way to track, trace, tax and control people...
or
It's a way to fairly maintain the cost of road repairs
or
It's an environmental tax for vehicle pollution
or
It's a way to keep the sherry cupboard full in Whitehall..

No one's really sure what its for.

But I play along ... :-)

I am here in Germany and I am going to drive it to England ( a ship will be used for part of the journey of course) But would I need a tax disc when I get there or are they only for cars registered in the UK?

https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/car-tax-discs

Only need a Tax disc if you have UK Registered Plates or Cars.
If you are just a Visitor or on Holiday then you do not need one :-)
...as being part of the EU you have paid something similar at yhome already?

I'm actually an American here in Germany and being in the US ARMY we have tax exemptions from road tax...its kind of nice actually. I loved London though. I have never met more kind and helpful people in my life...it made me want to move there. Of course I was only there for 4 days but I loved it
