Transmission cooler: Anyone?

Has anyone installed a tranny cooler? Just curious. I am running a little over 180 degrees (185 or so) at any given time.

1. Is it worth doing for this temp range

2. Any negatives on doing so?

3. What brands/models are recommended?

Thanks guys!

Dave

ADM performance sells a trans cooler kit for the camaro. I do not know who is running their setup though...

It never hurts. 160 would be much better for it.

2. Any negatives on doing so?
Just the cost of installing one.

3. What brands/models are recommended?
ADM put together a nice one specifically for the Camaro.

Thanks guys!

Dave
I highly recommend tranny coolers. Every automatic we have has one.

I have one and it does the job. The only reason I installed it was the aftermarket TC. Otherwise you are probably throwing money away. The one ADM sells is not cheap but it is a complete package ready to go out of the box. It is high quality and Andy and team did a great job putting together the package along with awesome directions. I would highly recommend it if you are going to purchase one.

you can never go wrong with keeping your trans fluid cool

I have installed the AMD Trans cooler and it is doing what it is suppose to, the highest temp so far has been less than 180 with it installed. Have not had a chance to get to the track yet since this was one of the reasons for installing one. Normally my trans would run anywhere from 185-220 or so just on the freeway and at the track, it would get to, if not over 250.

The hardest part of the entire install was trying to figure out how to get the lines out of the stock cooler, but once I got that figured out, the rest was easy.

I think I remember many people suggesting not racing a 4L60E at temperatures above 200*, so I added a second cooler (to my '02 Z) after my converter and it never saw above 180*; even at the track after a lap. It was a converter that was more efficient than the OEM one, but I'm a believer in keeping the fluid well below 200*, just to be safe.

I have one like this on my 2001 Camaro that had a 3600 stall. It worked great. You had to make your own lines, etc.

I think I am going with the ADM Cooler when I get ready for one.

180 is an ideal temp. It should live a long time at that temp. Put a stall in it and you'll need a cooler for sure

Not necessarily true about needing a cooler with a stall. I have a protorque through Jannetty with no cooler and no problems. Over 100 passes at the track, 95 at 10.99 and faster. 14k miles including 6 hr road trips in 100 degree summer heat.

What is the stall rating? What temp is your trans getting to? I would never have a stall without a cooler. I am thinking about a cooler with my stock stall.
Pay me now or pay me later.....
