My oil cooler started leaking so bad I had to tow my car yesterday.
Anyone able to update the parts they used? If mine is not covered under warranty I'd like to have the block off setup as a strong option. So it looks like need: 1) the "T" upper hard pipe is swapped with "-" 2) Coolant plug in block 3) block off plate for block? I'll add in part numbers to see if I have this right.

Thanks all, so
run a block off plate like With a non T'd coolant hose and a coolant block-off plug and the system is completely removed right?

Thanks guys, if it's not fixed under warranty I'll do this. Regardless I'll buy the parts so I can it at a later date. Very insightful research really appreciate it.

GM did replace my oil cooler under warranty but I doubt they will do it twice, so I'm going to buy the parts to delete the cooler in case I ever need them.
Any guidance on the large coolant plug, I would have bought it from TSP but $7.99 for the part and then $12 shipping didn't make sense to me.

Thanks will order the remaining parts tomorrow.
What's the consensus, is it an oil warmer or cooler?

Both, because it depends on the temp of the Coolant AND the Oil.

Best answer I've heard is that it is probably there to get the oil temp up in cold starts on cold days, help with fuel economy. It just averages the temperature across oil and coolant, so you're using the single radiator up front to directly cool the coolant and indirectly cool the oil. Maybe a manufacturing cost savings thing? Dunno. On earlier LS3 cars (G8 i think, maybe Vette) there wasn't even the loop up to the coolant hose - just a small metal box that bolted on as an oil "cooler". So I guess GM thought the loop was an upgrade from that
I still think it's worth it to plumb in a real oil cooler. Mine works great on the track.

This has been discussed in the V8 bolt-on help desk thread. T-bone was thinking about running one but don't know if he got around to doing it. Synner should already be running it but haven't heard a report from him either. Basically, it's a thermostat for a aftermarket oil cooler.

Thanks for sharing.
I think I'll delete mine when I do heads and cam. As for adding an aftermarket cooler I could come back and do that. We'll see. I'll be doing more research.

I'm thinking I am going to delete mine too!!! I have a small coolant leak, I believe it is at the line coming out of the block. Sure would be nice to have a "real" oil temp gauge though to keep an eye on it!!!
Where's a good place to get the oil block-off plate??? |
