A Question On Sound

Hello,

I have come to the Camaro forums in search of an answer I can't seem to find anywhere else.

I'll start with what I have going and then ask,

2014 Camaro 2SS Automatic, Straight Pipe, X-Pipe, stock cats and headers in place.

I am about 800 dollars in on my exhaust after running the gambit with mechanics who promised me volume and didn't deliver at all.

The first setup that cost me about 700 was the installation of new pipes the X pipe and two Magna flow straight through 2 foot resonators at the center of the vehicle. "A cat back"

This made my vehicle even quieter which I expressed to the mechanic who then assured me several times I just had to "break them in" So Over the Next two months I drove them in for about 1500 miles, of course nothing changed....

I had reason to believe him on the grounds that my V6 camaro with Glass Packs did get louder over time, and is too this day about 100 times louder then my 2ss currently.

This mechanic did not want to work on my car again without charging me way to much just to remove the dumb resonators...

So I took it in to another shop and got straight pipe done for a hundred bucks.

Now to the point, the High idle start up sounds great, but everything else it barely even makes any noise...

In launch control nothing, flooring it nothing, flying down the road in 6th nothing, I had a buddy floor it past me to make sure I wasn't missing the sound inside the cabin.

I have seen it lifted and verified there is actually straight pipe, my V6 is way louder at any RPM, and my buddies 2016 SS automatic at work with straight pipe is way louder.

After talking to about 10 muffler shops there is a 50/50 split on if changing the headers will make any difference in the sound levels.

With the tune I've been quoted any where from 1500 - 3000$ for the whole header purchase, installation and tune.

So I am coming here hoping and praying someone can advise me on why my car is silent and maybe provide insight on a cheaper change that will boost the volume levels without having to drop 3,000.

If you read my rant thank you,

-Chris

Trust me I don't believe it either but Its what I have. My setup has been verified and compared and this is the world im in.
I heard from one mechanic that Valving on the engine can effect noise levels.
*shrug*

Let us hear what you are considering as "barely makes any noise"

I think more of what you are comparing is two very different engines. V6's have a more high pitch "pinging" noise IMO, and that makes it feel like the decibel level is higher.

We have low rumbling muscle cars, not high pitch foreign vehicles

If you asked before you had work done, I would've recommended starting up from because you actually get gains from LT's

Longtube headers, and high flow cats. That will get you there. Mine had the Corsa Catback installed when I bought it. It was marginally louder than factory. I installed LTs and high flow cats and tune, it got quite a bit louder. Then I put the cam in, it's too loud for me now, I'm considering changing out the mufflers.

Get HF cats or ditch them all together. The cats are the choke point. Besides my cam, the HF cats made the biggest sound increase.

Here is the progression of my car (Post #28):

I am as entry level as it gets, I am really trying to wrap my head around a lot of the concepts here, and sadly any do it yourself modifications are mostly out of my reach due to lack of tools and the facilities to make it happen, so i end up depending on local mechanics who are either confused about what im asking for or dont want to do the work.

The high flow cats will make the biggest difference. I have JBA shorty headers, JBA high flow cat mid pipes, Magnaflow x pipe that deleted the factory resonators and muffler deletes and my setup is plenty loud to wake the neighbors. If I go long tubes eventually, I will have to throw some mufflers back on.

Hey I feel ya with what you are currently going through. I have a ‘13 2ss l99(auto). First I put flowmaster super 10s on. Nothing in sound. Maybe a lil but more drone due to our AFM kicking in. Then I put the magnaflow x pipe on to rid our l99 resonators. Still nothing. Even when my lil muffler shop guy said when installing said it’s gonna be waaaay louder. I was all pumped to start it up, and NOPE. No big difference. Did more research on here and got with DynoSteve and purchased the SCT X4 tuner. He tuned out my AFM and just flat out woke the automatic up!!
Car felt like a new beast but I still wanted some rumble. Did more research on here and purchased Texas Speed longtube headers with “Offroad” cats. Started her up and WOW!! She is alive!! My neighbor has two mustangs and he came over to see what was going on. He said, “damn!!, That sounds bada$$”
Long story short; I learned the hard way as well. Start from the front!! Next is the GPI MAX CAM!!
Where you at in Texas? I’m in San Antonio

Maybe someone local to you has tools. Headers with either offroad pipes or HF cars are easy to install on our cars.
