Holy Smokes. I wake up to this today. I am somewhat impressed hat Scott and the GM folks are taking the right track and looking at theproblem. Acknowledging the problem and working to make sure that the cars we have are top notvh in quality.

Now, let's take a collective chill pill and see how this is handled.

I personally feel like since GM has halted shipment on all M6's, the problem will not just be with a small Vin range. We heard that statement when the problem first arose. Something about the problem being in the "low 16k's". If GM has now haulted shipment, that leads me to believe that the problem is far more wide spread.

That being said, Im SO F%#@ing glad that GM is doing the very business responsible thing and acknowledging it and working to figure out the problem and fix it. Those who are whining about how they hope that GM will resolve it in a way that they dont have to take their car to the dealership... I think that's just plain crazy. If the transmission wasnt made to spec, GM acknowledges it and performs a recall, I'll gladly take my car into the dealer once the parts are available. I think alot of people on this message board spent so much time pining for their new camaro during ordering, manufacturing and delivery that there losing sight of the big picture a little. It's ok to let the car go to the dealership for a recall people, you can go without your car for a day or so!

While I love my car, it really is... JUST a car!

So anyways, just my two cents... I hope GM figures out the problem soon, it'll be nice to know what's ailing our manual transmissions... and Im very thankful that GM is so fast to jump all over this problem and come up with the right solution!

GM takes 3 years to get this car to market and apparently it has so many design flaws that every week we hear of a new major issue. Yes I consider L99s with no power and transmission shafts shearing under normal driving conditions a major flaw. I drive 2 American cars because that's what I prefer. But really, when was the last time you heard of Honda launching a new vehicle with these issues?

Not to mention, the UAW works a back room deal with the white house for salaries and benefits that far exceeds the market average. Obviously, that doesn't translate into better quality. Before I get flamed here, loose nuts on spoilers, A pillars not installed properly, and major paint issues are all indications of poor workmanship. GM's design has nothing to do with failing to adequately tighten 4 nuts on the spoiler. That is a half ass work ethic and nothing else.

I am a system engineer. I currently work on procurement and development of aviation platforms. I have designed and written test and evaluation protocols for new systems. As someone who is very familiar with writing requirements and their associated tolerances, I am amazed at what I see slipping through GM's process. GM has got to know they are under a microscope. I personally want to see the American Auto industry come back. This is not helping.

I completely disagree with your perspective.
Does GM make the tremec Transmission? No. Does Tremec make the output shaft that is failing? No.
What is GM currently doing FOR CUSTOMERS that are breaking the OS? They are installing an upgraded transmission from a much higher line car. ( 30k more) And the turn around time from tow in to drive out is currently 3 day's. I would say GM is above and beyond taking care of the customer.
And no more will be hitting the streets with this problem. Problem promptly addressed and rectified.
As for your little whine on lug nuts and piller trim, This is a first year line car. As an engineer you should know exactly what that means therefore I wont waste my time elaborating on that. I'll just say half of your post should not exist based on that one line.
There is no longer a problem with door piller trim. It was a short term problem. All these petty little whines are nothing in the infancy of this scheme. And corrected in a timely fashion.
Last, the human factor. I don't give a shit what line you compare, if you match production numbers you are going to find the same amount of errors give or take 1% factor. It's a fact of life. Unless your talking about comparing made by Ferrari or Leer.
Lighten up,take a day off to do something to unload how ever much stress your carrying. Deep breathing, and in the end every little thing will be what it is. Little. And the good will far out weigh the bad.

I have had my car for one month and have 3,000 miles on it. I broke it in gently for the first 1,500 miles and now drive "spirited" which isn't hard to do!

I have no trans issues and she is driving like a champ.

I hope there is a way to discover if mine is affected and so forth and not have to wait until it breaks type of situation.. That is what I am most afraid of, the feeling of not being so sure if my car is going to be reliable or not when I need it the most.. I am glad nobody was injured when the shafts had broken.. I'm sure we'd be in a different situation if there was. Scott, I would definitely like to know how GM is going to figure out who is affected without all of us having to bring the cars back to the dealers. Obviously the dealer would need to know what to look for if we did have to take it in.. Thanks for your help and please keep us as informed as you have been..
Agreed. A few months ago, GM would've clammed up and waited for a full blown meltdown before giving us any info. They're being proactive here (in more ways than many of us know!). Let's give them a chance to assess the situation and once they're able to do that I'm confident (since fbod stated just this) that they'll let us know if/how we're all affected.

I -HATE- to even bring it up, it's been debated a beeeelion times on a beeeeeelion forums... but I -=THINK=- it's good to run the engine through it's RPM range LIGHTLY during break in. In other words, you may not be doing yourself a favor stopping at 4000 RPM for a prolonged time (I certainly will be for probably the first 350 miles at least, but gently increasing after that). You don't need to live at upper range, but you might want to slowly go through it on occasion. Light acceleration (like 25% throttle or so) up to red-line is what I plan on after probably 500+ miles (and after a oil change), & downshifting deceleration as well to ensure everything is seated. There's a billion answers to the question and a lot of them seem to work, so feel free to ignore mine, but just saying you might want to read up a little bit on the plethora of info out there on the subject (if you haven't already) if you're adhering to a break in procedure.
Why would you deviate from the break-in instructions in the owner's manual? Doesn't make any sense to do so...I'll have to ignore your advice.
