Please tell me I do NOT have to tune
Hey there gang,
I havent been posting much, just reading around here and enjoying. That said, can someone please respond and tell me if there are long tube headers, and a configuration of high flo cats etc. etc. that I can install that will NOT require a tune??? I do not want to ruin my warranty just yet, so depending on the responses, I may have to get Shorties and a cat back. IF I CHOOSE Shorties, and cat back, is there a high flo cat - mid pipe that I can use WITHOUT tuning? I have been searchuing high and low, but cant seem to convince myself there is nothing out there. Thanks in advance folks. |

You can do shorties with the factory cats and not tune the car. High flow cats have a tendency to throw codes, though some have better luck with this than others. All long tube headers will throw codes eventually, but again some have better luck with running them un-tuned than others.
Realistically, you need to tune the car to get the most out of any header change. Its not mandatory though, and you can safely drive without a tune but you may see the check engine light come on for catalyst inefficiency.

even without a tune dealerships might give you trouble for headers. just because they throw a code.

Thanks.... I am thinking about adding cat back for now..... or atleast unitl that quick pleasure wears off I guess. I dont want ot deal with tune and dealer issues. the car only has slightly over 3k miles, and the damn rear end is moaning for the second time, and ready for a second oil change. I just dont want them to avoid fixing any issues while I continue to work out bugs on the car...

Thing about headers is you can go back to stock without them knowing if you have to.
Just sayin' But not a tune. |

See the thing is...technically the dealer has a very strong leg to stand on as far as denying your warranty for any power adders even without a tune.

Talk to your dealer/Service Dude, they may let you get er done. I spoke with my Service Manager and they will use common sense when it comes to Warranty. You will need to get a tune, you want to get a tune.

But a tune they can detect should they look. Headers that were swapped back before you take it to them they can't detect. |

exactly. If you need to go in for warranty work, let's say you exploded your gears from dropping the clutch at 5K, the dealer is REQUIRED to scan your ECM and send it to GM for approval before they begin any warranty work.

can be risky though. if you have major problems, you will need to get it towed home first or at a local shop to take headers off. i guess it can be done though

If I were going to try it I'd damn sure have it towed home first. Of course I tossed my stock headers so I never even had plans to do that. |

you can get shorty headers with some solo high flows which will make great power and sound with a nice catback longtubes pretty much always need a tune.... if you have an ls3 then the shortys and high flows should keep you happy its kinda unbearable with the l99 bec of the active fuel management though
